▼ ▼ WIRELESS NEWS Free Video Streaming Service Introduced For BlackBerry Nokia, IBM, Sony, Share Green IP Mirroring the open-source model and the move by many major industry players to platform-sharing alliances, a group of companies including IBM, Sony, Nokia, and Pitney Bowes have agreed to release dozens of environmentally responsible patents to the public domain. The IP portfolio, dubbed Eco-Patents Commons, is being managed by the World Business Council for Sustainable Development (WBCSD). Patents pledged to Eco-Patent Commons focus on environmental matters and innovations in manufacturing or business processes where the solution provides an environmental benefit, IBM said, exampling a patent for a manufacturing process that reduces hazardous waste generation or a logistics patent that may reduce fuel consumption. Among the patents contributed so far are, “Systems and methods for recycling of cell phones at the end of life” by Nokia. QuickPlay Media, a provider of content management for mobile TV services, on Monday introduced a free video streaming service for Research In Motion’s BlackBerry smartphones. The new service, called VideoStreams, serves up music videos, comedy, horoscopes, and extreme sports, among other content, to BlackBerry users in the United States and Canada. The video is streamed over networks that use EV-DO, a third-generation cellular technology deployed by carriers including Sprint, Bell Mobility, Telus Mobility, and Alltel Wireless. VideoStreams can be downloaded wirelessly via a smartphone Web browser and videos are streamed to the phone, so the video viewing experience is quicker and doesn’t take up storage space like downloaded video, according to QuickPlay. QuickPlay is offering the service for free, but subscribers are still subject to wireless data usage charges that vary among the different carriers. VideoStreams is initially available on the BlackBerry Pearl 8130. QuickPlay said it plans to add support for other BlackBerry models worldwide. Motorola Enhances Customer Service with Industry’s First Associate-Level Voice-Enabled Wireless Scanner Motorola introduced the new CA50, a voice over Internet protocol (VoIP)-enabled wireless scanner designed to enhance customer service, help reduce operational costs and increase worker productivity. The CA50 provides retail, healthcare and hospitality service workers with an integrated voice and data device that attempts to fill a large communications gap that is found on store floors, across hospitals and restaurants. The CA50 provides employees with real-time access to people and information and enables associates to fulfill customer requests at hospitality establishments, conduct price and inventory checks at retail stores and request immediate delivery of equipment at hospitals, among other business critical activities.
