According to SoonR, the investment it has received in its two years of existence totals $15.5 million. SoonR allows its users to access, share, or back up files on their desktop computers from their phones or other Internet-enabled devices. Because the files are synchronized from the PC to SoonR’s servers, the service works even when a PC is switched off. Sony Ericsson Lets You Silence that Cell Phone with the Wave of a Hand Sony Ericsson unveiled a cell phone that can be silenced by a wave of hand. A user can simply wave his hand over the phone to mute the ring tone and ignore a call on the Z555 flip cover phone, which will be available in the first quarter of 2008. Similarly, a consumer using the phone as an alarm clock can activate the snooze function by waving across the phone. ESPN and MobiTV Launching 24/7 Mobile Network Nokia’s N95 Smartphone Certified To Work with PCs, Home Devices ESPN and MobiTV are launching ESPN Mobile TV, a 24/7 mobile television channel for wireless devices. The new channel will feature predominantly live events and breaking sports news, as well as made-for-mobile programming and commentary. Among the first live programming to be featured on the channel: 50 hours of coverage from the Australian Open Tennis Championships; four National Basketball Association games; college basketball; Winter X Games; and Major League Soccer. Nokia announced that its N95 smartphone received certification from the Digital Living Network Alliance, which means the phone is compatible with wired and wireless home electronics devices and personal computers. The DLNA was formed in 2003 to ensure interoperability between consumer electronics. More than 250 companies are members of the alliance, including IBM, Intel, Sony, Samsung, Motorola, LG Electronics, Microsoft, and Nokia, among others. To become interoperable with other products on the market, products of these companies had to pass the alliance’s certification program. Nokia’s N95 8GB, which will be available in the United States in the first quarter of this year, was certified by the DLNA as a Mobile Digital Media Server. The smartphone is known for its multimedia capabilities and can be connected to other devices in the home for receiving different content, such as music, photos, and videos, according to Nokia. For example, the N95 can be connected to a TV and photos stored on the phone can be viewed on the TV’s large screen or the phone’s music playlist can be streamed over a home stereo system. LTE Specs on Track NEWS 43 Sp r i ng 20 0 8 ▼ Recent developments at the 3rd Generation Partnership Project (3GPP) standards organization indicate that the Long-Term Evolution (LTE) radio access network specifications could be completed by the end of this year or early next year. The 3GPP officially decided that LTE would be included in 3GPP Release 8, which is expected to be “frozen” by the end of 2008 or early 2009. The LTE standard is 80 percent complete. LTE has several backers, including NTT DoCoMo Inc., Verizon Wireless, and Vodafone Group. For operators, LTE offers a migration path to an all-IP mobile broadband network. ©www.is tockpho to.com/A dam Ka zmierski F m/Sandor ckphoto.co ©www.isto Szabo http://www.istockphoto.com/Sandor http://www.istockphoto.com/Adam
