Verizon Wireless Calls for Halt to Data Mining of Wireless Phone Numbers Alltel Wireless began offering a customer-relationship management application, called SalesNow, to small businesses that use BlackBerry smartphones. By implementing SalesNow on their BlackBerrys, small businesses can track and manage their contacts, deals, activities, and e-mails, and also share information with sales teams, according to Alltel. The type of information users can share includes weekly reports, team forecasts, and details of business deals. U.S. businesses will spend $9 billion on mobile CRM and other mobile applications by 2011, according to a recent study by Compass Intelligence. The study predicts that businesses will shift their spending from messaging to CRM and other collaboration applications, meaning they will focus more on strategic mobility instead of tactical mobility. Cellular South Fast-Forwards Its Gameplan Education Initiative NEWS 45 Spr i ng 20 0 8 ©www.istoc kphoto.com As another company leaks its plans to sell the cell phone numbers of private citizens, Verizon Wireless called on that company to halt the mining and sale of these numbers. “Stop it. This is a violation of Americans’ privacy. People expect their cell phone numbers to remain private,” said Steve Zipperstein, vice president and general counsel of Verizon Wireless. He added that Verizon Wireless intends to take whatever steps might be necessary, including litigation, to protect its customers’ numbers and privacy. According to its Web site, Seattle-based Intelius says that it will charge consumers a fee to find a number that is “unlisted or unpublished” and will identify a consumer’s wireless service provider. This information is mined from the Internet, personal Web pages and other sources, and has not been authorized by individuals to be sold for this purpose. Verizon Wireless has a long-standing policy not to provide its customers’ wireless numbers to any directory project or third party. Customers view their wireless phone numbers as private and consider their wireless phones as a place they don’t have to face intrusions from telemarketers and other unsolicited calls and messages. Cellular South announced the next chapter of its Cellular South Gameplan education program on February 4, which aims to help Mississippi high school student-athletes qualify for college, with the release of the Cellular South Gameplan DVD to all high schools in Mississippi. Working with its partners – the Mississippi Department of Education and the Mississippi High School Activities Association – Cellular South is expanding the Gameplan DVD program to every student interested in participating across the state. The Cellular South Gameplan DVD, in tandem with the previously established in-school workshops and one-on-one counseling sessions, will educate student athletes on the 16 National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) core course requirements, standards for determining eligibility and how to prepare for the ACT and SAT, the two national college admission and placement examinations. Thus far, the Cellular South Gameplan has helped more than 3,000 student athletes at 32 schools through January 2008. /Steven Fo lecy http://www.istockphoto.com/Steven
