Wireless Wave - Spring 2008 - (Page 50) ROAMING WITH ▼ • Opinion leaders are customers too – Unlike most other issues, opinion leaders have a personal connection to wireless. They rely heavily on their devices, thoroughly research them, and carefully choose handsets and plans. Many have traveled abroad and report frustration with inability to use their own wireless phones in other countries and envy both the phones and the level of service enjoyed in Europe and Asia, even if there are a multitude of facts that show U.S. consumers are receiving a much better shake in many respects than their counterparts in other parts of the world. Anything you do to strengthen customer service will pay off in press relations as well. • Don’t hide your light under a bushel. Wireless companies make real contributions in cities, states, and towns The Clear Choice in Infrastructure Solutions across America. Member companies should do more to promote their own philanthropic activities. • Identify believers and encourage them to tell their stories. Wireless technology is being used by businesses of all sizes today in America, making them more productive and efficient, and ultimately, more competitive in a global economy. And there are millions of real people with real stories about how wireless is positively changing their lives. These are genuine examples of the good things the industry is making happen today, and should be incorporated into a communications program. CTIA is already doing that, but the more its members collectively participate in that process, the more successful it will be. • Half of life is showing up. Through the years, other industries – pharmaceuticals, plastics, and paper to name a few prominent examples – have successfully responded to pending or existing regulatory efforts with significant investments in strategic advertising, positive communications and meaningful corporate responsibility campaigns. It won’t be easy, but CTIA-The Wireless Association is on the right track. Staff and member companies are working together to craft a multi-faceted communications strategy that includes a wide variety of tactics. Watch as the campaign unfolds – and begins to tell the real story of wireless in America.
