Communications Crossroads - Spring 2008 - (Page 7) telebites YOUTUBE JUST THE BEGINNING TELECOM TV BOOM IS HERE According to In-Stat, the telecom video market is growing quickly, with more subscribers, more deployments and more HD leading to more revenue for vendors. Recent research indicates that the worldwide telecom video head-end market will reach US$732 million in 2011, and middleware, content protection, and on-demand content will continue to rise. Furthermore, with video-on-demand (VOD) service becoming a ‘must have’ for many companies when they deploy video, the market for on-demand equipment vendors has improved as well. www.InStat.com Everyone has heard of the latest in broadband video—YouTube. But apparently, consumers are now willing to pay for online video services, as well. Parks Associates finds the number of broadband households paying for online video content at the end of 2007 stood at nearly 12 million, up from a little more than three million in 2005-2006. www.ParksAssociates.com TURNABOUT IS FAIR PLAY Last we heard, cable companies were taking a bite out of the telecom industry home field by offering VoIP services. Well, in 2007, according to CED Magazine, telecom companies got their revenge. The magazine, in its Top 50 of 2007, cited the boom in video competition from telecom companies as having a major impact on the cable industry’s video and broadband subscriber statistics—and their stock prices. SENIOR SENSOR TECHNOLOGIES According to Parks Associates, more than 3.4 million seniors will have access to networked medical sensors in their homes by 2012. Innovation in sensor technologies will make these devices lighter, smarter, and more reliable, driving adoption for home-based medical applications over the next five years.
