Communications Crossroads - Fall 2007 - (Page 11) QUICK HITS According a study by the FTTH Council, the number of U.S. homes receiving video, Internet, and voice services over direct fiber-optic connections has doubled over the past year to 1.34 million homes, with fiber now passing 7.9 million homes. … According to Point Topic (www.point-topic.com), more than 200 million people worldwide use DSL to access the Internet. Globally, DSL is by far the most popular technology, with a market share of more than 65%. … Telecommunications professionals expect mobile video and IPTV to drive significant growth in the telecom industry in the year ahead, according to a survey conducted at NXTcomm. Nearly all respondents expected increased infrastructure spending in the second half of 2007; and half see wireless and wireline networks converging within two years. CAMERA PHONES MAKE CREATIVE ARTISTS OF US ALL The mobile industry reached a milestone recently, as the number of camera phone owners climbed to 106 million in the United States, crossing the 50% threshold, according to M: Metrics (www.MMetrics.com). The U.S. lags behind the European markets—in the U.K, for instance, three out of every four mobile subscribers has a camera phone. An unintended consequence? Those camera phones are driving wallpaper and mobile graphics down, as consumers increasingly personalize with their own photos. MOBILE BROADBAND NOT WORTH THE MONEY According to a report from Parks Associates, so far mobile broadband has not caught on, as most customers are unwilling to pay for the service. Only U.K. Internet users are willing to pay a significant premium (an average of 28%). Consumers in countries with advanced phone-centric mobile Internet services, such as South Korea, Japan, and Italy, are even less interested in paying a premium for mobile broadband access.
