Until recently, not many in or outside the industry had heard of the service. But now, 3G home base stations, (also known as femtocells or 3G access points) are creating a buzz. Why? According to Rupert Baines, picoChip vice president of marketing, the short answer is this: “Femtocells improve both coverage (no more dead spots) and capacity, while reducing capex (capital expenditure) and opex (operational expenditure).” For one thing, femtocells don’t require expensive Winter 2007 COMMUNICATIONS CROSSROADS 19
