Communications Crossroads - Winter 2007 - (Page 26) TELECOMPAC Marty Rubin Smart City MEET THE NEW TELECOMPAC CHAIRMEN Hayden McKenzie North State Communications Marty Rubin of Smart City and Hayden McKenzie of North State Communications have taken on important leadership positions this year, serving as co-chairmen for TELECOMPAC, USTelecom’s political action committee. Both men bring energy and enthusiasm to the PAC as well as a determination to see TELECOMPAC continue to grow. Marty Rubin is the CEO and founder of Smart City (Florida), a $100 million telecommunications company specializing in theme parks, convention centers, hotels and planned communities. He also serves on the USTelecom Leadership Committee. Anyone who knows Marty knows his passion for politics and community, and that passion has rubbed off on his daughter, Sara, who is one of 20 students enrolled in the Sen. Bob Graham Center for Public Service at the University of Florida. Hayden McKenzie is the executive vice president and secretary of North State Communications (North Carolina), where he has worked for more than 30 years. He also is a member of the USTelecom Leadership Committee. McKenzie’s deep-seated passion for the continued success of ILECs in the ever-changing telecom industry is what motivated him to join Rubin as co-chairman of the PAC. Both Rubin and McKenzie understand that TELECOMPAC is a vital component of USTelecom’s government affairs operations and is necessary for continued legislative success on Capitol Hill. They have demonstrated their commitment to these efforts by continuing their own personal contributions to TELECOMPAC. In addition to fundraising for the PAC, Rubin and McKenzie have made it a priority to introduce a program encouraging member companies to start their own PACs. They feel it is important for member companies to have a vehicle for making their voices heard in their state capitals and on Capitol Hill. Rubin and McKenzie know that the strength of an association’s PAC is one benchmark used to rate the effectiveness of trade associations in Washington, and they are leading the way to ensure USTelecom remains one of the top associations. With their dedication to the priorities of USTelecom on top of their innovative ideas, TELECOMPAC is looking forward to more success ahead!
