This is a simple question, but a very complex subject. Unfortunately, there is not a simple answer as this subject has many facets. Not only are good employees hard to fi nd, but the struggle continues to increase as the labor pool becomes smaller with the baby boomers beginning to retire. On top of that, employee loyalty is down and we face the challenge of keeping our talented employees from jumping to our competitors. I’m sure most of you have heard the phrase that people are only as good as the company they keep. Has it ever occurred to you that a company is only as good as the people it keeps? If this is true, which I believe it is, then our focus should be on what we can do to hire and keep the very best employees. There are many surveys, books and reports that can help us in a search for answers. One example is the Employee Retention Toolkit, located at www.shrm. org. Before we could tackle this issue where I work, we analyzed our turnover information to determine where our highest turnover was occurring and the reasons why those employees leave. From this we identified some key areas on which to focus.
