Virginia Human Resources Today - Summer 2008 - (Page 12) HIRE THE BEST - A PBP Executive Report entitled “Why Good People Jump Ship and What You Can Do to Keep Them” states that retention starts with good hiring. “Recruiting better people makes it easier to keep good people. People often join an organization because of the quality of staff already in place.” We decided to put training in place that provides techniques and tips to managers on how to recruit and hire the very best employees. We explain that taking the time up front will pay off long term. In some cases, it makes sense to hire for attitude, and teach a new employee the skills needed to do the job. So after we have hired the best, we must strive to KEEP THE BEST - As I began researching recruitment and retention I was most intrigued by a concept that has been consistent for decades. “Good employees don’t leave companies, they leave bad managers.” We decided as a company to work with managers to develop their “soft skills.” Managers play a large role in retaining employees. The key is how managers treat employees. Employees want to be respected, valued, and listened to. Employees crave feedback, information and the feel of being needed and wanted. It is important that managers provide honest, specific and timely praise and share information about the company with their employees. Our overall strategy is to share information with our managers so they understand the importance of hiring and keeping the best, get their commitment and provide them with the tools that will help them to recruit and retain the very best employees. So, what is your company doing to retain your best employees? Cindy Hale is assistant director of HR at HH Hunt in Blacksburg.
