Western Independent Banker - January/February 2009 - (Page 8) A Message From the President & CEO In Making Sense of This Mad World, Trade Associations Play a Central Role IT’S A MAD, Mad, Mad, Mad World was a box office smash in 1963. The movie chronicled the madcap pursuit of $350,000 of stolen cash by a diverse and colorful group of strangers. Its déjà vu all over again in today’s mad, mad, mad, mad world, with the pursuit of billions of dollars that were, in effect, stolen from the unsuspecting by a diverse and colorful group of strangers to most of us. Hot on the trail of the money, trying to salvage what we can, we’ve witnessed actions by our key leaders in Washington and around the world that baffle our concept of reality almost daily. If the antics by the icons of industry, finance and political power were the plot of a movie, it would undoubtedly be dubbed as outlandish and impossible. Staying sane in this mad world takes some doing. Changes impacting the financial services arena are happening at breakneck speed. As community bankers try to decipher what these edicts means for their bank and customers, trade associations play a central role. Tactical solutions for shoring up the balance sheet, increasing liquidity and dealing with troubled assets are top of mind today. WIB is taking our role to “inform. educate. connect.” you to solutions to today’s problems very seriously. Your world is changing, and WIB is adjusting to these new demands. We will continue to offer the educational programs our members say are so valuable. I urge you to participate in our annual conference in March to support your own organization’s future. The value you will receive from the knowledge gained there outweighs the expense. Don’t succumb to the “cut out training and professional development” during this down cycle. We’re looking at other ways to provide value to you. A few of the new projects on our agenda that reach beyond our educational realm include: • Commissioning an independent analysis which details the above-market interest rates paid by IndyMac Federal Bank following their conservatorship by the FDIC • Investigating options for a troubled asset pool which provides banks a vehicle to contribute or sell loans into an equity fund and be able to share in appreciation if those assets are sold at a later date for a higher price • Saving you significant dollars through a group purchase program for RDC scanners • Advertising campaigns in five metropolitan areas to tout the benefits of community banks On December 15, I will celebrate 20 years as WIB’s CEO. At no time in my career have I seen a more pressing need for independent banks to stand together to fi nd solutions. I personally ask you to stay connected to WIB through membership for 2009. You won’t fi nd a bigger bang for your buck in the association world, I promise you that. Nancy E. Sheppard President & CEO Your world is changing, and WIB is adjusting to these new demands. 8 www.wib.org Western Independent Banker http://www.wib.org
