Western Independent Banker - September/October 2008 - (Page 12) What Can • Increase security awareness and responsibility among individual employees and create a process for reporting suspicions. • Increase employee awareness of your bank’s ability to monitor activities and of the possibility of prosecution. • Incorporate mandatory password protection and change policies and use of password-protected screen savers to minimize the possibility of insiders using another employee’s computer and/or account to carry out an attack. • Deactivate immediately computer accounts, system authorizations and remote access when employment or consulting agreements are terminated. • Use caution when providing remote access to critical data, processes or information systems. • Employ a layered security approach to allow remote access to e-mail and noncritical data, but restrict access to critical data and information systems only to employees physically located inside the workplace. • Frequently log and audit remote transactions. • Perform credit and criminal checks on employees. Look for histories of financial difficulty, fraud, theft, etc. • Employ an outside security organization (if you do not have a technical security department or system administrator trained in forensics) to use technical means in identifying insiders once an attack is detected.
