Western Independent Banker - September/October 2008 - (Page 8) A Message From the President & CEO Get a Bigger Bang for Your Technology Buck A RECENT REPORT indicates 66 percent of community banks report spending more on technology in 2008 than last year. With so many dollars at stake, choosing the best solutions can be overwhelming, time consuming and often expectations are not met once we’ve spend the money. To help minimize these challenges, your bank should take advantage of the WIB Annual Bank Technology & Security Summit on October 1-3 in Las Vegas, where independent bankers can learn what’s new, what works and what doesn’t, best practices and how to improve the chances of technology adoption success. Research shows that executives at most banks don’t spend the time necessary to truly understand the strategic value of technology both before and after the purchase, and an overwhelming majority of banks indicate that they aren’t even taking advantage of the true capabilities of their current technology. While I know that budgets are tightening for conference attendance, I hope that bank senior management will look at the cost of sending a few attendees to this upcoming conference as a great investment in your current and future technology costs. Get a bigger bang for your buck with the knowledge gained at this Summit! Bankers sharing information with bankers in a non-competitive environment is money well spent, and this Summit delivers on the WIB brand of top quality, content-rich topics and speakers. If your bank hired all of the experts presenting at the Summit, you’d be spending thousands of dollars! Plus, they will learn the latest on regulatory compliance – the second-largest increased cost expected by community banks in 2008. Here are some tidbits about the BEEF you’ll get from this Tech Summit: • Improve overall project methodology to make strategic planning and technology project management one of your bank’s key strengths. Sample templates and project plan write ups will be provided. • Learn lessons from early adopters on remote deposit capture. • Mobile banking and payments are at a tipping point – learn what your bank needs to protect and expand your market positions. • Security breaches are a result of social engineering schemes – learn the latest about the conmen out to get your bank’s and customers’ data. • How to implement blogs, podcasts and wikis to engage your customers. • Tips, tools and techniques for successful vendor management. I recommend that you send two staff members to this Summit – one charged with addressing the strategic issues and one with the technical issues. Together they will make a great team to plan and implement the technologies, policies and procedures your bank needs most to be successful. Nancy E.
