AudioMedia - June 2008 - (Page 12) 124th AES Review While its organisers admitted that this year’s AES Pro Audio Expo & Convention in Amsterdam (May 17-20) “ was a bit smaller than in recent years,” attendance apparently almost mirrored that of last year’s event in Vienna (6,200). Nevertheless, a number of notable products received their first European airings. And here they are AEA Microphones launched a new and ‘re-imagined’ version of the RCA 44 ribbon microphone, claimed to have a 6dB lower noise floor and more detail than the original. www.wesdooley.com According to Product Manager Thomas Stubics, AKG Acoustics’ AES-launched C 214 “ was designed as a budget-friendly alternative to the leading-edge C 414 family; because the C 214 uses the same one-inch diaphragm as the C 414, the essence of that heralded C 414 has been captured in this newest model.” The C 214’s road-tough construction is based around a dent-resistant metal grille that ensures high RF immunity without affecting its acoustical performance, plus a gold-plated XLR-type output. www.akg.com ATD2 displayed and demonstrated the XMG2.D, the largest (1.0m H x 0.82m W x 0.45m D) active FAR-branded monitor built by the Belgium-based manufacturer to date, boasting an impressive 15Hz to 35kHz frequency response from its two woofers (driven by two 800W Class D amplifiers), single mid-range driver (driven by a 200W Class D amplifier), and tweeter (driven by another 200W Class D amp), all time-aligned via onboard DSP to obtain a “ perfect impulse response.” www.atd2.com Audio test and measurement equipment specialist Audio Precision unveiled two-channel models of its award-winning APx500 Series audio analyser: the APx525 has two balanced and two unbalanced analogue inputs and outputs, plus 192kHz digital I/O, while the APx520 drops the digital I/O. www.ap.com CB Electronics showed its new P2-MMC2 USB MIDI-RS422 Video timecode interface to help MIDI-based editing systems communicate with the video world. The unit can be used for either inwards or out-going video control, with track arming and so on. www.cbelectronics.co.uk CharterOak Acoustic Devices expanded its product line to include the SCL-1 Solid State Compressor/Limiter, an all-discreet stereo compressor/limiter that received its first airing alongside the Enfield, Connecticut-based company’s new Small Studio Collection, comprising an SA538 vacuum tube condenser, E700 solidstate condenser, and a sequentiallynumbered matched pair of M900 small diaphragm condensers. www.charteroakacoustics.com DPA Microphones showcased its acoustically pre-equalised 4080 miniature cardioid lavalier microphone – designed to be bodymounted around 20 to 25cm from the mouth, and featuring a 4dB presence boost to improve speech intelligibility and definition, as well as its new 4017, a short (210mm body length) and exceptionally lightweight (71g) shotgun microphone offering a highly directional pickup pattern. www.dpamicrophones.com JZ Microphones launched a new addition to its Black Hole series (though this time it’s dark green ) – a cardioid-only version with 20dB pad. Also new was the ‘Pop and Shock’ package (pop filter and shockmount for the Black Hole microphones). www.jzmic.com Lawo launched its latest MC2 console at AES – the MC2 56. The console offers a more compact approach than previously, with smaller 16 fader modules, fewer user-definable controls, and touch screen implementation www.lawo.de Merging showed its new V6.0 Pyramix platform with MassCore technology (increased power using dedicated host PC processing core) and the new ADR Package for full ADR and Foley session control and administration using both the Pyramix and VCube products. www.merging.com Microtech Gefell launched several new microphones at the show. First was the new ‘ART’ anniversary series, which takes the M930 and M990 microphones and puts a PVC membrane into the capsule for a vintage sound. Also new was the UM930, a version of the M930 with five switchable patterns, and the M930 twin – a dual-diaphragm, dual output microphone. www.microtechgefell.de Minnetonka Audio Software announced the latest version (v1.4) of AudioTools AWE, its automated workflow engine for editing, format conversion, encoding, plug-in processing, and processing through external I/O devices, adding .AU and W64 file support, intelligent file handling on Folder Drop, plus optimised parsing of MP3 files for playback. www.minnetonkaaudio.com Neumann celebrated its 80th anniversary with the launch of the TLM 67, based on the well-loved 1960s-vintage U 67 – incorporating the same K 67 capsule, for example, but with newly-designed circuitry that closely reproduces U 67 characteristics without the use of tubes; switchable directional characteristics (omni-directional, cardioid, and figure-of-eight), selectable 10dB pre-attenuation, and a high-pass filter allow detailed adjustments to be made according to recording applications. www.neumann.com Neyrinck Software announced its new V-Mon plug-in for Pro Tools – a fully-featured surround monitoring system that can be controlled with dedicated TAC System hardware. It handles up to six 7.1 and eight IBC Review 12 AUDIO MEDIA JUNE 2008 http://www.microtechgefell.de http://www.wesdooley.com http://www.dpamicrophones.com http://www.ap.com http://www.jzmic.com http://www.minnetonkaaudio.com http://www.cbelectronics.co.uk http://www.akg.com http://www.lawo.de http://www.merging.com http://www.neumann.com http://www.charteroakacoustics.com http://www.atd2.com
