AudioMedia - June 2008 - (Page 24) Newstalk Dane To Be Different that would be stable onstage. Something that can handle good sound pressure levels in front of a monitor – mics that would fit on stage – and something that would make it easy for people to handle something that is rugged, something that you can mount onto the instrument with one hand. We’ve stepped up to the plate and said, ‘we’re going to do this big-time, we’re going to put money into it, and make something that’s really, really nice.’ AM: Will it be a single mic, like the 4080, plus varied accessories depending on the instrument? MS: If we’re lucky, yes, but it might not be the case. Actually, what we do is take a mic, and find out what needs to be done to make it perfect for an application. We might have one that has a bass roll-off, where another one doesn’t; or one that has a wider frequency range than others. It has to fit the instrument. The fewer the better – there’s nothing better than keeping components down, or keeping the numbers up – but we want to make it dedicated to the instrument. We’re starting out with sax, trumpet, guitar, violin – string instruments. And then we’ll move on from there to drums. AM: So the strategy with that range is to give musicians the opp or tunit y to take responsibility for the sound of their own instrument – one they’ve spent so much money on in the first place? MS: Spent so much money on and made such a big effort in practising. When you use a DPA you pick up a lot of detail, so you also want to make sure that you’re willing to hear those details. It reminds me of a demo I did many years DPA Founder, Morten Støve, talks to Audio Media about the Danish manufacturer’s plans to bring its message of quality to the stage and to the (HD) screen. S ince DPA’s beginnings it has built its reputation on sheer quality – a range of microphones that has broken new ground in quality, application, and innovation. Now, with expanded production capability and a precision tool shop since merging with Muphone three years ago, the company is setting its sights on the future. Morten Støve is one of the architects of the company’s success, and he agreed to talk to Audio Media about what that future holds. AM: We know that DPA has got big plans for the coming years – what’s the strategy? How has it come about? Morten Støve: We made a market model and bought reports from market researchers to find out where things are going, how big the world market is for microphones, and how is it split in broadcast, theatre, PA, private, other We could see, which was no surprise of course, that the studio business is not really where the big growth is these days. But the PA market is growing, and the musical instrument market for good quality microphones is growing. We want to give musicians an extension of their instrument – a good microphone. If people have a good instrument, they definitely have to look at the microphone as its extension. So, we have to make something “We want to give musicians an extension of their instrument – a good microphone.” The Oxford SuprEsser plug-in from Sonnox .
