AudioMedia - June 2008 - (Page 25) > ago at a festival where I met two violin players, and I had brought our new mic holder for violin. I put it on, and the first one played, and he said, ‘Oh no, it picks up too much noise when I play’. Half an hour later, I met the other guy and put it on. He tried it and said, ‘I have to go home and improve my technique’. Exactly the same thing, just two different opinions. If you’re using a really good mic, then you can really use it in the way you rehearse, and the way you practise – you can hear details that are good or bad; you can enjoy them; you can get inspired. AM: It’d be nice to think that musicians could arrive to an orchestral session with their own mics. MS: Yes. It will give them a sense of security as well. If you’ve been at live shows where they put up a cheap condenser for the violin section those people have been practising and practising, and they’re playing a really expensive instruments it’s not fair. We will start going out into rental houses, because they’re the ones out and about constantly, and they need something that’s fast to set up and works really well. Once they’re out, then the musicians will see them, and say ‘wow, that’s cool’. And another thing is that once you step up to the plate, and say, ‘we’re going to do this seriously and we’ll mass produce this’, you can get a good price out of it. Of course everything is relative, but it’s going to be sold at around 400-450 Euros for each mic. AM: So not a big price to pay compared to the prices of the instruments? MS: Exactly. AM: When will we see instrument-specific product? MS: The PLASA show in September in London will be the big launch. We’ll have musicians there playing with these new mics, and we should have 1,000 in stock by that time. That’s the goal. We will start out with four versions, and then we’ll expand that up to eight or nine different ones, but dedicated to the instruments. AM: We understand that another key market for DPA will be surround? MS: HDTV is going to be in a lot of big countries next year, and in some countries in 2011. The US is next year Japan is soon as well. There are so many ways of doing it, but if you want to do the big set ups, it becomes complicated. People like something that’s quick and easy – we’re talking about sports applications here. Of course, you can go in and use it for recording, but that’s not the main target. It’s sports applications, where you go out and want to have the feeling of being in the stadium, and that is going to be big. AM: And can you give us any clue on what form the actual product is going to take? MS: Physically it’ll be made with five microphones, and it’ll probably be a 5.1 solution, so we will have six discrete outputs. Physically, it will be about 30cm x 30cm, and be able to withstand being outside, so you don’t need anything to cover it. The ‘engine’ of the capsules will be the same as other DPA mics, but we are tuning them a little… Side interference 26|02|2008 14:45 we’re usingBy Side AMtubes on some, so it’ll be something that’s not been seen out there before. ∫ I N F O R MAT I O N A DPA Microphones A/S, Gydevang 42-44, DK-3450 Alleroed, Denmark T +45 4814 2828 W www.dpamicrophones.com A DPA Microphones, Inc., 2432 North Main Street, Suite 200, Side 1 Longmont CO 80501, USA T +1 303 485 1025 sound engineering RM8 TUBE MODULES SIDE-BY-SIDE FRONT TO BACK - CM1A, EM1A, PM1A & RM8 now shipping LYDKRAFT www.tube-tech.com A UADUI D I O E DE I D I A N jO V EEM 2 0 0R8 2 0 0 5 O MM A BE Un 25 http://www.dpamicrophones.com http://www.tube-tech.com http://www.tube-tech.com
