MERGING ADR PA C K A G E PYRAMIX ADR/FOLEY SYSTEM ADR and Foley sessions can be the most mind-bending affairs, with so much to keep track of, so many to satisfy, and, usually, altogether too much paper, tracks, faders, and fingers. Merging believes it has the solution – a system than can run your recording sessions like clockwork. PAUL MAC discovers the truth. THE REVIEWER PAUL MAC is the Editor of Audio Media magazine. erging’s Pyramix system is now well embedded in pretty much every area of the industry – broadcast, post, music, and so on. So now one question is, what can it offer those areas by way of ‘specials’ – the things that make specific jobs easier, more intuitive, or more productive? The new ADR package for Pyramix is one such special item, designed from the ground up to make the dialogue replacement or Foley session preparation and operation as easy as it can be, but as flexible as it needs to be. I spent a while at the Merging booth during this year’s European AES, with Merging’s Alphie Larrieu, learning a bit more about the ADR package, and what it might offer an often overly complicated process. It was obvious from early on that the key word was ‘automatic’. Merging has spent quite some time (two years, apparently) researching the practice of ADR around the world and what sessions require in terms of switching, monitoring, video display, and even billing. The idea is M that the engineer has everything required to run a session his way. That is, the ADR package should have to adapt to the requirements of the job, not the other way around. To this end, there’s a basic set of hardware that comes along with the additional software. The package is based around a partnership between Pyramix and VCube – the latter being Merging’s own video playback system for audio post production, capable of working with more than media file formats. With a single custom chassis for both parts of the equation, you can add GPIO cards for operating studio infrastructure during the session. A new custom keyboard for ADR operation, and/or the Isis or Ramses controllers. By using the already proven technologies of Pyramix and VCube, Merging claims it’s a package you can rely on, right from the start: “VCube by itself is a very complete video playback system, and Pyramix is a complete DAW that is already operational,” says Larrieu. “So attaching a new module on top of these two machines actually > 38 AUDIO MEDIA JUNE 2008
