Julian aims for sound as ‘flat’ as possible and any sweetening is left to the dub where there’s more time, more monitoring and a much, much broader palette of tools. Out of the Audio Developments 149 and on to the Zaxcom Diva V. The Diva hard disk recorder offers ten tracks in total, eight with analogue inputs, and two with digital. This means Julian can offer isolated tracks of up to six radio mics alongside the stereo mix that is also fed to the cameras, though one episode required eight isos, and so two Divas were synced together for the recording. At the end of every day the rushes are burnt to DVD RAM with the isos as polywavs. One of the glories of the Diva is the ability to add notes for the dubbing team to the audio files – alongside the ability to write a custom note the Diva can store standard notes and link them to a file at the tap of the screen. An end to paperwork must truly count as a digital dividend. I was really impressed by the sound team – and the day reinforced the truth that the toys are nice, but it’s the people that matter. Of course like all good ideas we should get a second series out of the sound for Doctor Who and maybe we can return for the dubbing process sometime, but I can’t go without a mention of one the day’s highlights, the Daleks. As we had Daleks on set, Nick Briggs was on hand to do all the voices live and to keep everyone chuckling between takes with a well observed collection of Dalek gags, or rather gags in a Dalek accent. If only I had the tape of the Dalek as bingo caller. From the mics to the mixer then, and here the Audio Developments 149 takes pride of place.
