In 1998, Gary Holladay, then Chief Engineer and Studio Manager for Four Seasons Media Productions in St. Louis, Mo., built one of the first one-gigabit Fibre Channel networks for Pro Tools workstations. Fuelled by a desire for a powerful, centralised storage system, the audio production community readily accepted Holladay’s ‘network solution’. His new venture, Studio Network Solutions, took off like a rocket. storage companies like IBM and EMC to take advantage of their storage technologies. Many of our larger customers have relationships with these corporations, so we’ll often utilise our software and expertise in SAN design to offer a complete audio and video SAN solution for the entire production facility.” SNS made its widespread debut with A/V SAN™ and A/V SAN PRO,™ a storage solution that enables users to collaborate on large projects and capture, share, and edit media among multiple Mac OS X or Windows workstations over a high-throughput, low latency Fibre Channel network. A/V SAN PRO works in tandem with such applications as Avid, Pro Tools, Final Cut Pro, Pyramix and Adobe Premiere Pro. Current A/V SAN PRO users range from Sony Tree Studios in Nashville, the recently renovated, -room Technicolor Studios in Los Angeles, and numerous other premium television networks, topnotch animation studios, video game developers, and mid-size production studios. “Building storage networks can easily be compared to designing a control room/studio. It takes a blend of art and science to make a room sound good for the intended use. The technology has to be molded to fit the exact needs of the studio we are working for. The tools we use for this are a combination of hardware and custom software that we’ve written specifically for production environments large and small.” Because Holladay and most of his key staff got their start in entertainment media production, It Started With One Good Idea… till based in St. Louis, the privately owned company has become a leading developer and provider of technologies for production storage, networking, and workflow efficiency for the media and entertainment industries. Their software and hardware can be found everywhere from small project studios to houses of worship to the highestend audio and video production facilities. “We’ve always had a wild mix of customer sizes – literally from the smallest one-person company, to the largest multinational corporations,” says President Gary Holladay. “One of our first installs was in Los Angeles – workstations worth of Pro Tools on one SAN. Now, our largest install is a little over workstations at a large film studio. At the highest end, we partner with Enterprise 38 AUDIO MEDIA JULY 2008
