Thus, this issue we’re on location with the Doctor Who production sound crew, who contribute a lot to the series’ bigger-budget appearance and feel. The main theme is the importance of people and teamwork to the success of a project, oddly echoed by the need for six people to fly the TARDIS when towing Earth back to its proper location; I think some ergonomic work is required, given that it’s supposed to be a single-pilot vehicle. The penultimate episode left a lot of people wondering just how you keep a secret as big as a new Doctor from the all-seeing eye of the media press, the rumour mills of fan-sites, and even the wider BBC staff. As it turns out, the regeneration was a bit unorthodox, with the Doctor becoming himself again, aided by a severed hand from a previous regeneration phase, which then helped create a second ‘almost’ Doctor. We had crisps, dips, and extended family to get us through the evening. If you’re not a fan, basically the Doctor (version 10.0), amidst much anticipation and rumour from the user-base, regenerates into version 10.1 (largely unchanged) and also spawns a ‘lite’ version (10.09 Beta), now native to an alternate universe, though development on this has ceased and there won’t be anymore lite revisions – unless the developers decide otherwise, at some point in the future. All available plug-ins (Captain Jack, Sarah Jane Smith, K9, Donna Noble, Rose Tyler, and so on) were bundled together into a value pack for a short time as interest peaked, but have now dispersed and are waiting in the wings until they can add something to the project (though are still being developed for other platforms). One of them (Donna) got a late upgrade and now completely fails to recognise version 10.1. Unfortunately, development work on Donna has ceased, which is a bit upsetting for all those who invested in her at the start. So, even with a universe of technology and imagination at its disposal, Doctor Who still manages to reflect real life as most of us humans experience it. Having said that, we’ve a few regenerations of our own going on at Audio Media. First, you may have noticed that we’ve switched our digital issue to the NXT Book platform. We think it’s a better experience, and it brings us in line with the rest of the extensive NewBay Media library. If you’re not already on the subscription list, give it a go (audiomedia.com/digital). Also online, we’ve now got the regenerated versions of our console, microphone, and monitor PDF guides. These have detailed information on selected products and manufacturers, an index of relevant manufacturers, and a few informative articles to inform and entertain. And don’t forget to download the 124th AES podcast review – all at audiomedia.com.
