This can be done independently, so when Renaud adjusts his compressors, it’s not changing anything on monitors – and vice-versa. The owners of the PA company like that solution, because it’s cost effective and practical.” Thereafter, two weeks was spent preparing and saving the show on the console in situ, keeping it safe on a USB key, separate hard disk, or both, specifically for running the show, “ because that’s something you do when you can hear what’s happening,” Millou tells Pion, adding: “It could be done remotely, but it’s more practical when you have the performers Side By Side AM 26|02|2008 14:45 here, and you can hear what you’re doing.” > French digital audio mixing console designer/ manufacturer Innovason, supplied by SSE Audio Group partners Melpommen, one of France’s leading live sound hire companies, who just so happen to be based in Nantes – around one hour’s drive time from Innovason’s base of operations in Plougoumelen (Brittany), while conveniently maintaining an office in Paris. According to ‘acting translator’ Xavier Pion, Innovason’s Sales & Marketing Director, “Renaud [Millou] is the front of house guy, and he’s a freelancer who works most of the time for Melpommen. They have three Sy48 and two Sy80 Innovason consoles, and here on Fame – Le Musical they have an Sy48 for FOH and an Sy80 on monitors.” Having just come off working on the world premiere of Good Zachary, directed by none other than John Malkovich as part of the Théâtre Comédia’s 2007/2008 season, Millou was already familiar with the theatre itself and its recently installed d&b audiotechnik-reliant loudspeaker system – comprising Q1 and Q10 passive two-way loudspeakers, J-SUB actively driven two-way bassreflex subwoofers, and E8 high-performance twoway multi-purpose loudspeakers (supplemented by a rented Nexo PS8 flying cradle-mounted GEO line array system for onstage monitoring); yet, amazingly, this latest three-month stint on Fame – Le Musical represents his first outing on any digital console, let alone an Innovason one! Translating, Pion was quick to put Millou’s flying by the seat of his pants-style experience into its rightful perspective: “He says that – once it’s configured – he likes using the console, because it is very practical. The small footprint of the console means you can actually manage a huge amount of inputs with only 48 faders. He’s using the SmartFAD function for managing the maximum number of inputs with the minimum number of faders, so on the same 11 faders he’s doing drums, bass, keyboards, a horn section, and percussion, by just selecting one button, and then you have all the different levels and equalisation on hand. When you only have 48 faders – which is a lot, but you have a big production like this one – you need to find space, so that’s one good way of finding space, something he likes. He hasn't had time yet to attend a proper Inovason training seminar, to be familiar with all the configuration possibilities.” To that end, there are apparently 86 preprogrammed ‘pages’ or scenes in the show, as far Side 1 concerned. “He’s not doing everything as Millou’s automatically,” says Pion. “He does a lot of it > sound engineering RM8 TUBE MODULES SIDE-BY-SIDE FRONT TO BACK As it was, the PA company physically configured the inter-connection between the two Innovason consoles off-site – including two networked Dio Core modular 64-channel EtherSound-enabled stage boxes – in readiness for dealing with the show’s ten onstage musicians and 20 singers, such that Millou’s FOH-positioned Sy48 and Monitor Engineer Jacques Maudre’s Sy80 shared the same 61 inputs, though only the former can control the gain. “The engineers really do their stuff separately, although Renaud has the gain on the pre-amps of the Dio Cores downstairs,” confirms Pion. “Actually, it is possible for the monitor guy to adjust quite a bit of the digital gain through the compressor trim, but they had to agree on the gain level for all the inputs.
