They could have done more pages, but he wanted to retain control, otherwise you spend your time changing pages all the time, because there’s always something happening. “He has one VCA called Choir; one VCA for the lead singers – the microphone that is used for the lead is not always the same, so he has to adapt to that, which is why he has so many pages, because one page might only last a few minutes; and one V C A f o r a l l t h e b a n d ’s i n s t r u m e n t s . For example, when singer number one is singing into one microphone, and then it goes to singer number two, you change to another page where all the equalisation is done for the second singer. So when the show is running, Renaud’s not actually doing the equalisation, because it’s all prepared in advance, although he’s adjusting when necessary.” In which case, channels can be ‘relaxed’ from being automated on Innovason consoles: “Basically, it isolates the function you want to tweak, and allows you to tweak it, choosing whether you affect just that one channel, one page, or whatever. When you hit ‘Relax’, you get a list of possibilities, so you can go, ‘Right, I want to relax EQs,’ choose whatever it is you want to apply your tweaks to, and it will isolate that function and take it out of the automation cycle, if you like, allowing you to work on it, and then just drop straight back in.” A ver y handy feature to have in the changeable world of long-running theatre, where stand-ins sometimes well, stand in at short notice – as is Innovason’s Off-line mode: “Offline means that what you’re doing is not affecting what is heard. you could, for example, go to page 10 and make a change, and go back to the mix at any time. Renaud says he once forgot to make some modifications, and when he remembered it was too late, so it was very practical – he went to the page where he needed to do something, and nobody heard anything!” THE SYMPHONY SYSTEM The Most Powerful Audio Workstation Available The Symphony System combines Apogee’s legendary X-Series and Rosetta Series converters with Apple’s revolutionary Mac Pro and Logic Pro audio workstation using the 32-channel Symphony PCI card. BEST SOUNDING The most sonically advanced audio hardware interfaces combined with the most advanced music creation and production tool. Sadly, Fame – Le Musical’s successful run at the Théâtre Comédia came to an early end on June 28, 2008, allegedly over a rights dispute between its producers. Assuming said dispute is resolved, however, plans are apparently afoot to extensively tour the show throughout France and possibly into Benelux territories, too, with more Innovason-driven mixing to boot, news of which will undoubtedly please Pion no end. Singing the Théâtre Comédia’s technical team’s praises thus, the Innovason man concludes, “They’re really using the features of the console; I’ve not seen that many times to that extent. What they’ve done is really clever; when they change scenes, for example, if there’s one singer who’s lead, but in the next scene she’s still there, but now leading alongside four others who formed a choir in the scene before, just hitting ‘Next’ and seeing them grouped together is great! And in the next scene, the three teachers in the Fame story who were previously part of the choir are now lead, so the faders jump up for them. Two weeks of preparation for this was really short – no sleep lots of coffee! It’s a very nice configuration, actually.” ∫ H i t, M i s s, O r M ay b e ?
