We've been compiling this equipment guide annually for quite a few years now, and hopefully its usefulness has increased over that time. Once again we've added new manufacturers to the mix, and the number of products included has increased to well over 4,000. Unsurprisingly, the DAW section has upped its population more than the others, though it's still that bastion (and definition?) of audio technology, the microphone, that takes up the lion's share. I have informally named 2008 the year of the handheld recorder. It's one of those trends that always makes me wonder what came first – the market or the technology? It's easy to see that the availability and development of technology in converters, solid state memory, and small screens has played a part here, but none of these were particularly lacking before, so what else has changed? For one thing, radio is not the only outlet for broadcast journalism anymore. The podcast, and audio reporting generally, is now playing a sigificant role in the day-to-day business of newpapers, corporate communications, online training, blogging, and more. Also, whereas the great location recording divide, until relatively recently, was a large hole between MiniDisc and Nagra, plank-by-plank the manufacturers have been building a bridge between the two, and quality is not being comprimsed in many cases. On the other hand, maybe someone came up with a very good product idea, and the rest followed? The best answer is a combination of all three, becasue that would point to a sustainable, useful, and constructive expansion of the audio person's toolkit.
