AudioMedia - October 2008 - (Page 21) > vision range of ‘lyre’ shock mounts with the INV-9 and INV-10 models. The INV-9 is designed for the usually hand held shapes of SM57/ SM58-type mics (also the Neumann KMS105), while the INV-10 is specifically aimed at the Sennheiser MKH range. Also new from Rycote was a range of mini Windjammers for the ever widening handheld recorder market, so reporters are not left out when it comes to elemental protection. Yellowtec showed a preliminary version of its answer to the HHB FlashMic – a traditionally shaped handheld microphone with a recorder and USB interface built in – called the iXM. In this case, it’s a beyerdynamic capsule (though with interchangeable heads), ‘intelligent level setting’ (no AGC, apparently – though I’m still not exactly sure what the difference is yet), line input, record markers, low-noise buttons, dual power sources, and standard, interchangeable SD card support. Too Loud, Man One mini theme that came up at IBC in the audio department was the new recommendations from the BCAP rules on perceived differences in loudness between programmes and adverts (though not idents and promos, incidentally) and a feeling that the new rules might be a little ‘woolly’ – leaving broadcasters scratching broadcaster heads. ITU recommendations for perceived loudness are mentioned though, so DK Technologies was keen to show its new ‘solution to the loudness issue’. The MSD100C Loudness Meter is a standalone unit that incorporates the ITU BS.1770 and BS.1771 algorithms and, according to DK, “provides accurate loudness matching of audio from a number of different sources and offers a selection of working modes.” Also in the broadcast checking arena were a few new tools from Sonifex. The RedBox RB-TGHD unit is a new multi-channel HD tone generator for line identification and level checking. It uses both the BLITS (Black And Lane’s Ident Tones For Surround) tones, and the GLITS (Graham’s Line IBC Review Identification Tone System) tones, as well as EBU R49 stereo line-up and channel ID, plus a phase check. There are analogue and digital variations, plus optional sync reference cards. There was yet more confidence boosting from Sonifex with a new line of 1U rackmount monitors with builtin loudspeaker monitoring and metering of up to ten stereo audio sources. Free Stuff Sound Devices, known for its robust and high quality location equipment, had a busy stand at IBC, with people looking over the new T eighttrack recorder. The additional I/O and, apparently, a whole new digital architecture, comes with a GB internal SATA drive and also supports Compact Flash cards and external FireWire mass storage devices. In addition the company showed its new CL- controller for the T with eight large rotary faders for the eight inputs, plus control over various input settings and assignments, and a solo facility. Lastly, Sound Devices showed an updated version of its free crossplatform Wave Agent utility software, with file playback, metadata editing, PDF report generation, batch conversion of .Wav types between polyphonic and mono files, frame-rate modification, and large timecode, actual time, and remaining time counters. Not bad for nowt? With a more front-line theme, Sonifex also showed its new RB-MTV1 voiceover Monitor With Talkback. It’s for voice-over, commentary, and continuity booths, and includes four inputs, two outputs, a mono microphone input (XLR), and a well-featured pre section, with various routing and monitor mixing to suit most applications. DAW To DAW Sales For consoles IBC wasn’t quite as frantic as PLASA, but it did have a few new things. First, I wandered onto the Studer stand and asked, as I think probably others have before, when Studer was going to do the right thing and introduce DAW control via the Vista surfaces. Andrew Hills was able to usher me straight over to a Vista and proudly point out the Pro Tools system on the stand with its fader control taken care of by that Vista. The implementation is HUI, and is currently limited to 32 faders, but apparently you can define multiple systems, each with 32 faders. Once that excitement had subsided I was treated to another new enhancement of the Vista system with complete routing and control flexibility across networked consoles – multiple Vistas can take control of other inputs on other consoles remotely with routing being taken care of centrally, and a simple but effective system of priorities so you can never be accused of stealing inputs. So – central control from the main console of a smaller satellite console without operator? It has possibilities Lawo wasn’t standing still either. It showed the new Crystal system, which it bills as ‘the ideal mixing console for broadcasters who want to be on air – now’. It’s characterised by a slim, compact control surface, plus a system core that fits into a 1U rack, the VisTool touchscreen software with additional functionality (timers, snapshots, DSP, levels, and logic interfacing), and optional modular panels with a variety of additional controls and indicators. Calrec had travels on its mind with the launch of the new Flypack version of the Omega with Bluefin console. ll of the DSP, power supplies, and I/O fit in a double rack unit so the console can sit on top, and there are minimal connections to be made to get the whole system up and running. Fairlight, meanwhile, showed V2 software for its CC-1 accelerated DREAM II platform with a huge number of new features including extended media import, convert and export formats, real time video playback, record, cut, copy, paste, and conform up to uncompressed HD, SD to HD upconvert, watermarking, 192 sample accurate audio playback and mixing (96 track simultaneous record), and more. Quite a leap. ∫ AUDIO MEDIA OCTOBER 2008 http://www.mcdsp.com http://www.mcdsp.com
