AudioMedia - October 2008 - (Page 34) Lexicon | PCM 96 > To begin with, one could use the Cascade Stereo configuration to run two different stereo effects in series with each other – such as Random Delays feeding a Plate Reverb. The algorithms themselves – here is where this review could run away from me – I could talk about each reverb algorithm, the unique sound and best application, all of the new innovations, special controls, and how much like a hit record or film this thing sounds, but I shan’t (for fear of some major cuts from the lovely Audio Media editors), so here is a condensed look. The PCM offers a comprehensive selection of legendary Lexicon reverbs and effects, including the return of Lexicon’s prized Concert Hall reverb. Appearing for the first time are new Room and Hall algorithms, plus an assortment of new mono reverbs and effects. Selectable, reversible reflection patterns, multimode filters, and ‘infinity switches’ provide additional new capabilities. The stereo reverbs and effects include: Room, Hall, Chamber, Random Delay, Classic (Random Hall), Plate, Dual Delay, Ambience, Resonant Chords Chorus/Flange, Concert Hall, and Signal Generator. The Halls are amazing, the Random Halls are very lush (much like the L), the Chambers and Rooms are frighteningly present and realistic, and the Plates will make just about anything sound alive and ‘produced’. The Delays are fat and very tweak-able, the Chorus is warm and ‘swimmy’” just like in the s, the Concert Halls are royal, and the Resonant Chords algorithm is amazing – using impulsive energy at the inputs to excite eight resonant voices (notes). The PCM also gives new capabilities to traditional reverbs by adding multimode filters at several spots in the audio flow. This allows more exact shaping of the reverb while still maintaining the distinctive Lexicon sound. All reverbs also have an 'Infinite' switch that allows the reverb to run forever, a very awesome and useful feature for creating unusual backgrounds and sound effects. Lexicon’s new Room algorithm provides a more flexible alternative to convolution type reverbs by providing reflection patterns that can be easily selected, scaled and equalised – all while simultaneously passing audio. They can be instantly reversed or combined with a traditional reverb to extend the decay or bring a stronger sense of ‘liveness’ to the space. The bottom line is that this is no ordinary processor. The design of the PCM is top notch. Lexicon has covered every possible luxury that this reviewer could ask for. The ability to remotely control and reliably stream audio to and from a DAW via FireWire shows a serious dedication to bringing the the Lexicon heritage to the cutting edge of current production needs. The classic bloom of reverb that comes from every algorithm is quite definitely amazing and something to behold if you’ve never used a high end reverb before. In any application, the PCM provides versatility and sound that is unmistakably Lexicon. ∫ I N F O R MAT I O N Conclusion £ GB£1,999.00 exc.VAT A Lexicon, Inc., 8760 So.
