AudioMedia - October 2008 - (Page 40) SOUND DEVICES 788T Digital Audio Recorder TY FORD wants to present Sound Devices' new digital recorder a 'no brainer' award for its ease of use and general all-round niceness. he Sound Devices T is (over) simply described by Sound Devices as, “a high resolution digital audio recorder with time code.” That’s sort of like saying the Hummer H is an off-road vehicle. This is a four pound, feature rich, eight track recorder with GB SATA internal drive, rechargeable Li-Ion battery, and external power supply/charger. This is not a prosumer hard drive recorder. This is a very professional audio recorder specifically designed for film and video. There’s not enough space to go into detail about the more intimate features of this device that make it truly extraordinary. Take a trip to the T PDF manual at www.sounddevices.com to discover all of the features. The T is a second gen. device. Lessons learned from their T have been applied. While viewed as a ‘purt near perfect’ recorder by some, the T reduced the range of wireless mic receivers at certain frequencies when packed in a bag with those receivers. That problem does not exist with the T. Also, the rechargeable battery comes out a lot more easily. Although fairly straightforward, I would suggest reading the manual before using it. Basically, you’re recording up to eight tracks of very nice sounding preamps, line or AES/EBU digital sources to - or -bit wave or poly wave files to the internal HD (up to TB), internal CF card and/or DVD-RAM drive attached via either the or Firewire ports. Unlike the T, there are only seven sample rate choices between kHz and . F. T THE REVIEWER TY FORD is a recording engineer in the US, and regular contributor to Pro Audio Review, another NewBay title. The T generates highly accurate time code and recognises composite NTSC, PAL, and Tri-level sync. The T supports . , , , . , . DF, , DF, and + frame rates via a five-pin LEMO connector on the right panel. It can be operated without time code or in free run, record run, free run jam once or hour modes. The T also has its own sample clock with PLL circuitry and ignores external word clock, AES clock, and video sync during playback. On the left side of the T are four female XLRs, four TA Ms and a headphone jack, and rotary headphone control. The preamps in the T are new to Sound Devices. I can’t tell a lot of difference between them and the ones in the T, but the new ones are supposed to have even more dynamic range. They are extremely quiet and very nice sounding. The T came with firmware version . installed, and I thought the input limiters sounded a bit grungy, but after downloading and updating the firmware to . they sounded a lot better. The front panel is very straightforward; eight retractable input gain knobs separated by four toggle switches. Each switch instantly brings up the Input Settings Window that allows access to each input’s mic/line/digital, phantom power, input gain, high-pass filter (mic only), input limiter, track routing, and polarity. In this mode, the audio from the particular input selected will be soloed to the headphones. A separate input delay window allows each input to be digitally delayed > Trinnov’s Optimizer: IS YOUR ROOM UNDER CONTROL? www.sound-link.co.uk w w w. t r i n n o v. c o m UK Distribution: Sound-Link Marketing - tel: 01223 264 765 - trinnov@sound-link.co.uk 40 AUDIO MEDIA OCTOBER 2008 http://www.sounddevices.com http://www.trinnov.com http://www.sound-link.co.uk
