Presented during the PLASA Awards for Innovation on the second night of PLASA . Voted for by the industry, the Award was presented to John Stadius by Tony’s wife Susie. Stadius is a distinguished audio designer: in , he joined Soundtracs PLC, designing disco consoles, mixers, power amplifiers, and speakers. As Technical Director between , he continued to design a wide range of analogue mixing consoles for live, broadcast, and recording uses – from the c o m p a n y ’s first digitallycontrolled analogue console in , to its first fully digital console – the Virtua – in . He was also instrumental in designing Soundtracs’ first large-format digital console, the DPC-II. In the company was bought by DiGiCo, and Stadius created the D – the company’s first truly live digital console – then the DS for post and broadcast, the D T for theatres, and the D for the live arena. The latest development from Stadius and his team is the creation of ‘Stealth Digital Processing’ – a departure from the DSP approach in favour of a single large-scale FPGA. The first product to use this technology is DiGiCo’s SD console, followed by the company’s latest product, the SD . The event included headline performances from Santogold, The Go! Team, Alphabeat, and The Gossip. SPS Systems managed the PA requirements for the event, with support from fellow hire companies APR Audio, Evosound, and Fearless Audio. Two iDR10 stage racks with iLive-144 control surfaces were selected for the FOH and monitors on the main stage, with an iDR10 and iLive-112 surface on the second Local Heroes stage. w www.allen-heath.com Electro-Voice Boom Shuttlesound reports an impressive boom in Electro-Voice line array system sales in the UK, catalysed by new compact cabinets introduced to the market in the last months. In addition to the recent sale of EV’s XLD and XLE modules to APR Audio, Shuttlesound has added five rental companies into the EV family: Clear Sound, based in Stratford-upon-Avon; CWS, based in Peterborough; Ethix, based in London; Leisure Tech, based in Wigan; and OneBigStar, based in Nottingham. CWS, Clear Sound, and Ethix have all invested in EV’s XLC system that has been revitalised by the recent DVX upgrade, which brings EV’s new mid-bass woofers into the XLC -inch low-frequency/ cabinets. Colin Smith, Renkus-Heinz Versys VLX3 Renkus-Heinz unveiled its all new VerSys VLX line array at the annual Buffalo Chip Music Festival last month. The VLX line arrays were showcased by Sure Sound and Lighting, and powered by Lab.gruppen PLM Q amps with built-in Dolby Lake processing. "I was extremely happy with the new Renkus-Heinz VLX systems, which offered outstanding vocal clarity," commented Alice Cooper's FOH mixer Randy Meullier. "Our audience know Alice's lyrics very well; we had no trouble putting the vocals where we wanted them." Renkus-Heinz (US) + www.rh.com Last month saw the first show with the new Soundcraft Vi Series V3.0 software in use as Norwegian band Secret Garden finished off this year’s tour with a special concert including a symphony orchestra. Secret Garden has been touring China, Korea, and Norway since April with two Soundcraft Vi6 consoles and AKG microphones. The last concert of the tour was a special outdoor show incorporating a 27-piece symphony orchestra in the band’s hometown of Kristiansand, Norway.
