Plasa ‘08 Review The PLASA08 exhibition has bucked the general exhibition industry trend in spectacular style with an 11% growth in visitor figures across the event’s four days compared to 2007. The 13,000+ attendance figure (subject to ABC audit) reflects an exceptional level of visitor pre-registration as well as a growth in new and returning exhibitors to an expanded show floor, say organisers PLASA Events. “The show’s success was due to a combination of factors,” said Director of Events Nicola Rowland, “in particular a targeted marketing campaign combined with special online registration offers; a growth in exhibitor numbers; even more new product launches than in 2007; a greatly expanded educational programme; and improved visitor and exhibitor facilities.” The show witnessed the simultaneous international launches of four major new live sound consoles, from DiGiCo, Innovason, Midas, and Soundcraft, while a host of new audio installation products reflected the huge growth of the integrated systems market. IBC Review Adamson presented the Metrix Ultra Compact Line Array Enclosure, an enclosure designed for small to medium permanent installations in houses of worship, theatres, and nightclubs, as well for the main system in small to medium touring applications. A newly designed Adamson ND8-ML 8.5” Kevlar neodymium mid-low frequency driver is optimised for this two-way enclosure, and is paired with a 1.4” HF (3” diaphragm) compression driver, mounted on Adamson’s HF wave-shaping chamber. www.adamsonproaudio.com AKG Acoustics introduced the wireless WMS 4500 microphone system. Like its predecessor, the WMS 4000, the WMS 4500 offers a wide range of available components for operational versatility, but has been modified for more durable use and greater flexibility with wireless applications, says the company. www.akg.com Alcons Audio introduced the LR7, the latest and smallest member of Alcons’ pro-ribbon line-arrays. Billed as ‘micro pro-ribbon line-array’, the system features a single 6.5” woofer, next to a 4” pro-ribbon driver, in a 15-degree vertical projection configuration. The 16Ω impedance, and a choice of 90-degree or 120-degree horizontal projection, makes the LR7 suitable for A/V projects, where compact form factor with perfect line-array throw and imaging are required. www.alconsaudio.com Allen & Heath highlighted the latest developments in its iLive digital mixing system, including the new iLive Editor offline editing software. Consoles from the entry-level ZED range, including the new ZEDR16 dedicated Firewire recording mixer, were also on display, as well as the Xone range of DJ products, including the Xone:S2 club installation mixer, the new Xone:4D mixer/ controller with a high spec USB 2.0 soundcard, and the Xone:02 DJ scratch mixer sporting a new face plate and crossfader. www.allen-heath.com BSS Audio has added four new members to its Soundweb London family of digital signal processors. The new BLU-800, BLU-320, BLU160, and BLU-120 join the BLU-80, BLU-32 and BLU-16 devices in the series. HiQnet London Architect, v2.00, provides support for the four new devices and several significant feature additions. A dedicated and comprehensively featured Room Combine Processing Object abstracts the complexity of room combining applications and reduces programming time for such applications. The addition of Dynamic Metering allows efficient troubleshooting of Soundweb London systems through the use of simple signal presence monitoring. www.bssaudio.com DPA Microphones unveiled the first microphones from a new range geared towards the MI market. DPA believes “that musicians deserve to get the best sound possible from their precious instruments when playing live. To this end, they have taken their groundbreaking technology and created a range of cost-effective mics tailored for a wide array of musical instruments, complete with robust carrying cases and gentle, discreet mounting solutions”. www.dpamicrophones.com One of the hidden highlights of this year’s PLASA Show was the presence of Martin Audio’s new ASX floor-mounted active installation subwoofer, facing out into the aisles at the astonished passers-by. Aside from the sheer size of a cabinet designed to house a ” (mm) transducer, Class D amplifier, and full DSP, the ASX subwoofer “revolutionises ultra-efficient, low frequency sound reproduction – achieving the highest ever SPL from a single low frequency enclosure housing a single drive unit.” The combination of transducer, amplifier, and DSP provide double the output capability of a conventionally driven loudspeaker driver of the same size. When incorporated into a Martin Audio Hybrid horn design, the complete system can deliver a dB peak output (measured) from a single enclosure. It is designed for premium club installations, stadium installations, and for special effects in theme parks. www.martin-audio.com Funktion One’s RM18 tri-axial stage monitor is a radical departure from the standard 15” and compressiondriver configuration, delivering a significant performance advantage over conventional monitors, says the company. www.funktion-one.com JBL Professional is extending its Control Contractor Series loudspeakers to an even wider variety of applications with the new Control Contractor 40 Series premium inceiling specialty loudspeakers. Shown for the first time in the UK, several of the models incorporate JBL’s conical Radiation Boundary Integrator (RBI) technology, providing “broad and consistent pattern control with superior sonic performance”. www.jblpro.com Kling & Freitag debuted a newly developed line array system – K&F Sequenza 10. With three built-in patents, this system is billed as “an innovative sound amplification tool”. www.kling-freitag.com MC2 Audio’s T3500 two-channel amplifier is the latest addition to the established T Series, and is aimed at the market demand for a more powerful T Series amplifier geared to fixed installations, says the company.
