AES ‘08 Show Report The San Francisco AES exhibition this year was expected to be a little down – a bit pessimistic. It was not. Buoyed by busy aisles and plenty of new products, the show was lively and interesting. The release of Pro Tools 8 did much to help – it was almost always tricky to get past the crowds at the Digi stand. But there was plenty more to see than that. Here’s a selection… Apogee Electronics unveiled Symphony 64, a 64-channel, 24-bit/192kHz PCI Express card, made to interface its X-Series and Rosetta Series converters directly to Apple’s Mac Pro. www.apogeedigital.com Audio Impressions brought its new DVZ Strings 2.0 high-resolution virtual instrument strings library to the show, boasting Divisi (DVZ) technology for unheard of realism in balance and performance. www.audioimpressions.com Audio-Technica launched new microphones in two genres – shotgun, and stereo. The new BP4071, 4071L (Long), and 4073 (compact) shotguns were there, with the 4071L stealing the show due to sheer length (21.22 inches). The AT8022 and BP4025 XY stereo field recording microphones (consumer/professional, and professional respectively) also made their debut. www.audio-technica.com Beyerdynamic introduced its latest headsets for live or studio broadcast environments; the DT 790 and DT 797. Both headsets feature DT 770 Pro, a closed reference studio headphone with pivoting gooseneck microphone. www.beyerdynamic.com Blue Microphones announced the BottleRocket Stage One, a transformerless solid-state microphone system, and the BottleRocket Stage Two, a transformerless tube microphone system. www.bluemic.com Bricasti displayed the new Model 10 Remote Console for its M7 stereo reverb – a dedicated hardware remote that incorporates eight front-panel meters (for up to four connected Model 7s) with various machine selection, set-up, and dual control (M7 and remote) possibilities. www.bricasti.com Cakewalk showed its new SONAR V-Studio 700 system, incorporating the new Roland-designed VS-700C V-Studio console, VS-700R I/O, an integrated Fantom CS hardware synth, and direct control of Edirol video hardware. Not forgetting, the new SONAR 8 Producer DAW software. www.cakewalk.com CharterOak Acoustic Devices showed three new handassembled products; the M900-T condenser mic, SCL-1 Solid State Compressor/Limiter, and the Small Studio Collection (a microphone solution bundle for studios on a tight budget.) www.charteroakacoustics.com Genelec debuted its new SE (Small system, which combines the new SE7261A 10-inch DSP subwoofer with 8130 digital input active monitors, and AutoCal GLM (Genelec Loudspeaker Manager) SE software for easy configuration as a subassisted stereo or multi-channel reference system. www.genelec.com The latest version of iZotope’s Ozone mastering suite was on show, featuring updated processing algorithms that have been optimised for modern low-latency DAW environments, and a new Intelligent Loudness Maximiser. www.izotope.com Josephson Engineering was celebrating 20 years of business with a new anniversary dual-diaphragm mic, the C720. The two signals from each diaphragm are brought out to individual XLR connections so the results can be mixed from any polar pattern required. www.josephson.com Mackie introduced two new compact effects mixers with USB I/O; ProFX8 and ProFX12. “No other mixer in this class offers such a complete set of mixing tools,” commented Greg Young, Product Manager. Mackie also showed updates to the PPM and U Series. www.mackie.com Meyer Sound debuted the UPQ2P narrow coverage loudspeaker, SB-3F sound field synthesis loudspeaker, and the 2008 TEC Award winning UPJunior VariO loudspeaker. www.meyersound.com Neutrik introduced the opticalCON Transceiver Adapter for the connection of opticalCON chassis and LC SFP transceivers, in an attempt to ease design integration with SFP transceivers. www.neutrik.com Pearlman Microphones announced the Church mic, a faithful remake of Stanley Church’s mic from the mid 50s. The Pearlman model even includes the Triad transformer that has been out of production for nearly half a century. www.pearlmanmicrophones.com Prism Sound showed new versions of its MEA-2 stereo analogue equaliser and MLA-2 stereo compressor. Each product has been given performance upgrades and a facelift. www.prismsound.com Renkus-Heinz revealed an updated version of Easera SysTune with the ability to run DSP plug-ins.
