AudioMedia - November 2008 - (Page 35) iZ Technolog y | ADA TEN21 STUDIOS While not a residential studio of itself, Ten Studios in Bearsted, Kent, has the feel of a country retreat residential facility, set in grounds off pleasant winding lanes no more than an hour from London, with that rarest of studio facilities – parking. The studio is housed above a large garage block away from the owner’s house and, as you walk up the stairs to the studio area, you find another unusual and welcome feature, daylight. All the rooms have light from large windows, an advantage with such a location. There are three main areas to the studio. The control room, vocal booth, and drum room. Although you are able to view through the windows to the various areas from the control room, the orientation of the desk means you would be looking over your shoulder a great deal of the time, so to help with this all areas are video linked. The main control room is a good-sized room dominated by the -channel Audient console. There are plenty of work surfaces above custom wooden racks for any additional equipment you may be bringing into your session. As well as the iZ Radar , recording and editing can be done utilising MOTU Digital Performer . through the iZ ADA interface fitted with Nyquist converters. An extensive network set-up allows for quick and easy transfers between systems and, throughout the facility, a comprehensive array of tie lines makes for flexible use of all areas. Monitoring comes care of the Miller and Kreisel MPS P, along with an MPS . A pair of Klark Teknik Jade Ones MKll were also here to remind me of my BBC days! A good variety of both hardware and software processing is available, as well as a nice microphone collection that includes the Neumann M, Audix D, and D along with others by Rode, AKG, and Shure. The main area of interest with Ten is the drum room. Housed here is a Pearl Master Custom -piece kit in extremely good general condition and set-up. Both the owner, Sean, and his son, Charlie, are drummers, so this is an area they cater for very well. The drum room itself is quite compact, but this in no way reflects in the sonic results that can be achieved. During my testing of the iZ ADA, Charlie was good enough to provide his drumming skills, and the sound achieved in the space was impressive (audio reference www.ten. biz/audiomedia.html). The room itself gives a solid, larger than you expect sound. It always helps when you have a good instrument well maintained, and played; and, as the drums are part of the studio setup, you can expect excellent results. Drums are not the only instrument that Ten can provide. There are several guitars and amplifiers as well. There are bass and lead acoustic guitars by Fender, Gibson, and Washburn, and even a Fender -string Banjo. The arrangement of facilities at Ten has been well thought through and designed. The attention to detail can be seen and appreciated everywhere you go within the studio. They really are in a position to cater for a wide variety of musical work, with a good deal of experience with live instrumentation. Ten studios has a relaxed, friendly, airy feel to it. I enjoyed my time there and would be happy spending long session periods in such a pleasant and great sounding environment. Great coffee too! studios in Kent for my main listening test, where the iZ ADA is fitted with the Nyquist analogue option. The arrangement of facilities at Ten studios (more detail about this can be found with the accompanying mini studio profile) allows for live recording, and owner Sean Kenny’s son, Charlie, was kind enough to play some drums for us during the review. Having had experience with the RADAR system, I had a clear idea of what to expect with the iZ ADA, and I was in no way disappointed with what I heard. Every time I am reacquainted with these conver ters, the analogue feel that they produce always surprises me. These are not converters for those looking for a pure transparent path, but for those who want and feel that the converter is very much part of the tonal chain. The only question that pops into your mind is: Why has it taken so long for iZ to put these converters into a standalone unit? As Charlie’s drums ran through the iZ ADA, and then a number of session playbacks fed to the iZ ADA via MOTU Digital Performer, I once again remembered why the RADAR had the effect that it did. Warm and crisp, the converters have lost nothing now they are available in this way. The iZ ADA met all my expectations based upon those years of experience with the RADAR system. All the tonal attributes are there with no apparent change or compromise. The touch-screen interface is simple and intuitive in use, and the variety of connectivity will exclude no one who wants to experience all that the iZ ADA has to offer. ∫ I N F O R MAT I O N Conclusion £ GB£POA A iZ Technology Corporation, 240-109 Braid Street, New Westminster, BC, Canada V3L 5H4 T +1 604 395 7878 F +1 604 395 7888 W www.iZcorp.com A UK Distributor: SCV London, 40 Chigwell Lane, Oakwood Hill Industrial Estate, Loughton Essex IG10 3NY, UK T +44 (0) 208 418 1470 W www.scvlondon.co.uk A1 Discrete Class A and Tube Dual Preamp / DI A2 Discrete Class A and Tube Stereo Processor Ice Cool Looks Discrete Class A Electronics Plus Tube Warmth All Ebony Series feature tube stages with variable drive in addition to the discrete Class A circuitry putting you in total control of how ‘warm’ or how ‘cool’ you want the sound.
