AudioMedia - November 2008 - (Page 60) PRODUCT SAMPLER On Location Tools With climate and background noise vying to ruin your tracks, getting a great sound on location can be a challenge for any sound recordist. Audio Media goes in search of the best gear to add to your arsenal. Audio-Technica debuted the BP4071L at the 125th AES Convention. At 21.22” long, the BP4071L is one of the longest shotgun microphones currently available. The mic was developed at the request of broadcast professionals, and boasts an extremely narrow polar pattern and transformerless design. The mic requires 48V DC phantom power, features an integral 150Hz high pass filter, providing a simple transition from flat frequency response to a low-end roll-off, and will be available from January 2009. The Edirol R-44 is a four-channel recorder housed in a rugged metal chassis. It uses SD or large capacity SDHC card storage media, and offers flexible recording options with up to four channels of uncompressed audio available at selectable bit depths with sampling frequencies between 44.1kHz and 192kHz (stereo mode only). Broadcast wave is also supported, and two R-44s can be synced together to offer up to 8-channel recording for surround and more demanding applications. The H5-X is the top in the Holophone line when it comes to sonic quality and sensitivity. Designed with critical recording situations in mind, the H5-X features five small-diaphragm mic elements arranged to help capture recordings that have high-spec and low noise floor. “As surround continues to strengthen its foothold in the broadcast industry, there is an emerging demand for the highest quality recording possible,” states Michael Godfrey, CEO of Holophone. “Users will be able to create an extremely precise, immersive 3-D environment for their viewers.” www.audio-technica.com www.edirol.com www.holophone.com The 4017 from DPA Microphones is a short (210mm) and extremely lightweight (71g) shotgun microphone, offering a highly directional pickup pattern. Danish company DPA claims that the 4017 fulfils the long-term demand for a high-end shotgun mic designed for boom applications. “If you’ve ever tried holding a mic boom for more than 10 minutes, your arms will appreciate the low weight of the 4017,” stated Sales and Marketing Director Paul Koza. The Fostex PD606 records audio from eight tracks to an internal 80GB hard disk drive (HDD) and standard-size 12cm DVD-RAM discs. The PD606 avoids complex menus and multiple button pushes, favouring solid knobs and buttons. Another practical feature of the PD606 is the provision of two standard V-mounts, with the user in control of the primary source. Features include analogue and digital I/O, timecode with tri-level sync, digital mixer input routing, and USB 2.0 access to the hard disk. The PMD 620 is Marantz Professional’s newest and smallest handheld portable recorder. It offers direct to MP3 recording in three quality levels, or uncompressed 44.1/48kHz WAV format in 16-bit resolution. The 620 is the first in the PMD series to be SD compatible, with a capacity to accept memory cards of up to 2TB. The PMD 620’s firmware includes ‘Copy Segment’ editing, which uses non-destructive cut and paste editing to create a new sound file, accessible via the USB 2.0 port. The handheld recorder is powered by two AA batteries and also features line and external mic inputs, and an external mic output. www.dpamicrophones.com www.fostex.com www.marantz.com The stand-alone ‘plug and play’ 5100 from DPA Microphones can be mounted on a camera or microphone stand, suspended or handheld, and requires no additional signal processing. “The unit is primarily designed for (HDTV) television surround sound production to add surround ambience, especially in connection with sports events, ambience recording at different venues, and documentaries.” Stated Sales and Marketing Director Poul Koza. “However, everyone who produces sur round sound can take advantage of this unit.” HHB’s DRM85 FlashMic range combines Sennheiser condenser capsules with a 1GB Flash recorder and USB interface. The most recent additions to this range are the omni-directional DRM85LI and cardioid DRM85-CLI. These models are each powered by two AA batteries, and are equipped with line inputs, enabling journalists to record press conference feeds via the supplied XLR to bantam jack cable. When connected, this switches out the microphone signal, recording only the line input signal. The upgraded FlashMics are also compatible with mp3 files. The MicroTrack II is a handheld two-channel WAV and MP3 digital recorder from M-Audio. It features 24-bit/96kHz recording, a USB 2.0 connection for high-speed drag and drop file transfers, a T-shaped stereo electret mic, balanced ¼-inch TRS line inputs, RCA line outs, and pro-quality pre-amps with 48V phantom power. The MicroTrack II records to Compact Flash or Microdrives, and is powered by a rechargeable lithium-ion battery, providing four to five hours recording per charge without phantom power engaged. www.dpamicrophones.com www.hhb.co.uk www.m-audio.com 60 AUDIO MEDIA NOVEMBER 2008 http://www.edirol.com http://www.audio-technica.com http://www.holophone.com http://www.dpamicrophones.com http://www.fostex.com http://www.marantz.com http://www.dpamicrophones.com http://www.hhb.co.uk http://www.m-audio.com
