AudioMedia - November 2008 - (Page 67) www.audiomedia.com Mind Over Matter New venue to revolutionise London’s music scene. Matter, the new three-floor, , ft brainchild of fabric owners Keith Reily and Cameron Leslie, is set to transform London’s music and club scene. The , capacity venue will form part of the Arena Complex in London’s Docklands. Most Technical’s Dave Parry was asked to ‘take the use of entertainment technology to a new level.’ By incorporating Timax Outboard Processing into the sound system, he has enabled the operators to map sound in three dimensions and manipulate it around the entire venue. A Martin Audio W L Longbow line array, driven five ways, forms the mainstay of a system that can either create a complete sound field through the core of the building, or separate sound zones as required. Backing up the Longbow is Djenerate’s new BodyKinetic interactive dance floor system, pumping , W of sound through the ground beneath patrons’ feet. In a world-first, the entire entertainment system has been configured so that all lighting, sound, and video is controlled from a single Avolites Diamond desk, with MIDI signals triggered from the Timax. “I have wanted to do an operation like this for ten years,” commented Dave Parry. “I have taken it to a whole new level, and included Pro Tools HD recording and a video editing suite. The recording studio links to a separate studio and I have put camera points in for full HD transmission.” Matter London + () www.matterlondon.com Less than a month after its launch at PLASA 08, DiGiCo’s new SD8 console is on the road and mixing monitors for Art Garfunkel. “Being a one truck tour, space is at a premium,” says AudioLease’s Steve Sunderland. “With the SD8 we don’t need to carry big racks of outboard gear, it’s very compact and yet it still sounds awesome.” Monitor Engineer Mikey Osman commented, “sonically it’s incredible. It’s every bit as clean and pleasant sounding as the D series, and the band are really happy.” w www.digico.org Glyndebourne Opera House has installed a Cronus Digital Matrix as the cornerstone of a new integrated communications and paging system. The system will provide flexible paging to multiple zones, and integrate production communications and 85 radio beltpacks covering the entire site. “I had already priced a replacement analogue paging system, but the costs were considerable,” commented Simon Yapp, Head of Audio Visual and Sound. “However I soon realised on talking with RTS that their solution using a 24-port Cronus digital communications matrix was not only cheaper, but would offer much more flexibility than the existing system.” w www.rtsintercoms.com Prestigious Lawo Installations Lawo mc consoles have been installed in Prague’s Národní Divadlo and Austria’s MUMUTH, a new facility connected to the Graz University of Arts. The installation of a pair of mc consoles at the Národní Divadlo, the National Theatre of the Czech Republic, forms part of a new audio management network based on the Nova HD central routing system and DALLIS I/O systems. The first mc is a - - console located in the front of house control room of the main auditorium, whilst the second, smaller - - frame console, is mobile for independent studio recording, stage monitoring, or as an extension of the main console in the central auditorium. The consoles made their operatic debut at the Národní divadlo with Bizet’s Carmen and a drama production of Tom Stoppard’s Rock ‘n’ Roll. Austria’s MUMUTH is a new development, intended to connect the Graz University of Arts with the public, and is due to be opened officially on March , . The impressive glass structure will combine stage, teaching, and rehearsal facilities, centred around a large theatre with a public address system based on Ambisonics. The individually controlled speakers of which the system is composed are managed by software developed in-house by scientists from the Institute for Electronic Music and Acoustics at the University. The decision to use Lawo in the system was largely influenced by the openness of mc to external control. Lawo Networking Audio Systems + www.lawo.de Meyer Sound has announced two new products; the SB-3F and the 500-HP. The SB-3F Sound Field Synthesis Loudspeaker is designed to project mid and high frequency energy over distances of up to 1km, and incorporates a multi-channel, high-powered class AB/H amplifier to deliver 9,000W of power. The 500-HP is a compact high-power subwoofer, designed for rigging with the M’elodie line array loudspeaker, or in ground-stacked configurations. The subwoofer features two high-power, 12-inch cone drivers designed and manufactured at Meyer Sound’s Berkeley headquarters. w www.meyersound.com AUDIO MEDIA NOVEMBER 2008 67 http://www.audiomedia.com http://www.digico.org http://www.matterlondon.com http://www.rtsintercoms.com http://www.meyersound.com http://www.lawo.de
