It seems to have surpassed those, and brings a solid, high quality, bundle of analogue channels, plus DAW control and interfacing to a market where complications can be overrated.” AKG C214 Ac c o rd i n g t o Pro d u c t Manager Thomas Stubics, AKG Acoustics’ C 214 “ was designed as a budgetfriendly alternative to the leading-edge C 414 family. As the C 214 uses the same one-inch diaphragm as the C414, the essence of that heralded C 414 has been captured in this newest model.” The C 214’s road-toughened construction is based around a dent-resistant metal grille that ensures high RF immunity without affecting performance, plus a goldplated XLR-type output. www.akg.com EDITOR’S COMMENT “This is definitely a ‘why-didn’t-they-think-ofthis-sooner’ product. This will allow users to edit individual notes within polyphonic audio material by changing their pitches, key, and position. If the software works Cakewalk Sonar V-Studio Package Allen & Heath ZED R-16 Cakewalk’s Sonar DAW package is a popular choice for Windows-based music production, and the Sonar VS-700c V-Studio console is designed to offer those using it an integrated hardware-based solution for editing and mixing. Featuring DV-7/V-LINK compatibility, the VS-700c allows the user to adjust plug-in parameters along with other more traditional channel-based controls such as pan and mute. The console’s unique T-Bar control can be used for surround mixing, while the nine touch sensitive faders, a rotary jog wheel, LED displays, transport controls, and an extensive monitoring section including two independent headphone outputs, allow the V-Studio to as well ‘in the wild’ at extracting individual performances as it did when demonstrated with a Chet Baker tune at Frankfurt, expect a plethora of summer hits featuring the vocal delights of long deceased classic crooners. Anyone buying the Melodyne plug-in after March 12 automatically qualifies for a free Version 2 upgrade when available – which is now likely to be early 2009. www.celemony.com EDITOR’S COMMENT “After MusikMesse several people asked whether Melodyne DNA was a real product or a late April Fool. DNA could be one of the most significant new technologies in our industry for some time.” The ZED R-16 represents Allen & Heath’s first dedicated recording mixer in over a decade, and effectively combines an analogue mixer with a FireWire audio interface and ‘home studio’ routing for building tracks. Features include 16 mono and two stereo inputs, dual mic pre-amp, four-band fully parametric EQ, 34 AUDIO MEDIA DECEMBER 2008 http://www.allen-heath.com http://www.sonarvstudio.com http://www.akg.com http://www.celemony.com
