AudioMedia - December 2008 - (Page 62) www.audiomedia.com The 2008 Yokohama Triennial, Japan’s international celebration of contemporary art, displayed an interactive piece by British artist Cerith Wyn Evans. The installation was based on directional audio technology. Evans collaborated with Holosonic Research Labs to hang Audio Spotlight directional speakers on reflective discs, attached to a web of rotating mobiles. The effect was a whirlwind of sound unique to each listener, described by the Audio Spotlight’s creator Dr. F. Joseph Pompei as “very well aligned with the original intent that I had for the technology.” w www.holosonics.com Income Injection For Touring Artists lMG’s new division provides technology link for artists to make money on the road. Arthur commented that the venue was almost acoustically perfect. “If I had to find a problem, the only thing that comes to mind is that the room is so live,” Arthur commented, “But that clears up as soon as the room is filled with punters.” w www.adamsonproaudio.com Let there be sound The world listened as Presidentelect Barrack Obama delivered his historic acceptance speech to nearly 250,000 supporters in Chicago’s Grant Park. Sound design for the event was provided by Clair Chicago, and featured Midas consoles with an Electro-Voice X-line PA. The system supported an unprecedented 720 press feeds. Director of Event Management, Ian Hunt commented: “Using analogue was great because it really added depth to Obama’s voice, and imparted gravitas to his words. It was wonderful to hear him through the Midas preamps.” w www.electrovoice.com w www.midasconsoles.com Pope Benedict XVI recently made his first visit as pontiff to Paris, praying together with more than 250,000 followers on the lawns of the Esplanade des Invalides. Sound designer Fred Goguet was responsible for the mammoth audio system required for the event. Goguet’s design comprised 96 MICA, 78 M’elodie and 20 MILO line array loudspeakers, with a side of UPA-1P and UPM-1P loudspeakers. His design was influenced by limited heights and the absence of scaffolding, leading the designer to create a system of 22 main, and 10 secondary arrays. Marc de Fouquières of French audio firm Dispatch observed that the main challenge of the project had been overcoming the limited time allocated to soundcheck the system. “We didn’t have much time to listen to and fine-tune the arrays once they were in place,” commented Fouquières, “So we configured most of it beforehand in the MAPP Online Pro acoustical prediction program, which proved to be exceptionally accurate. Also, with the SIM 3 audio analyser, we were able to compensate for how the crowds would change the acoustics, and our work during the service was made a lot easier.” Meyer Sound Laboratories +1 510 486 1166 www.meyersound.com 62 AUDIO MEDIA DEcEMbEr 2008 http://www.audiomedia.com http://www.holosonics.com http://www.adamsonproaudio.com http://www.lmgtouring.com http://www.meyersound.com http://www.electrovoice.com http://www.midasconsoles.com
