AudioMedia - December 2008 - (Page 63) www.audiomedia.com Snow Problem For Midas Midas systems assist Snow Patrol gigathon and electrify proms. At 1.00am on Sunday October 26, in Dublin’s Gate Theatre, preparations began for a performance by a five-man band from Glasgow. Over the following 8 hours, Snow Patrol would go on to complete four gigs in four cities: Dublin, Belfast, Edinburgh, and London. The concentrated mini-tour featured a Midas Heritage 3000 at FOH, Midas Pro6 Live Audio System on monitors for the first three shows, and an XL8 Live Performance System for the final gig in London. The BBC’s Electric Proms season continued the Midasfest, with a host of consoles arriving at The Roundhouse in Camden. These consoles were employed for headliners including Oasis, The Streets, and Burt Bacharach. Engineer to The Streets, Shan Hira was impressed by the performance of the XL8. He first used the console for the Chemical Brothers at this Summer’s T in the Park. “This is the best sounding console available, without a shadow of a doubt,” he commented. “You can’t drive other digital consoles like you can this, especially with the dual gain feature, which gets you where you want to be.” The balance of an analogue feel and digital extras was an attraction for Hira, who saved settings from rehearsals, used the XL8’s onboard dynamics, and even created scenes for each song in the set. Midas +44 (0) 1562 41515 www.midasconsoles.com London’s Britannia Row Productions handled the sound for Oasis’ November UK tour. At FOH, the company supplied an Outline Butterfly system consisting of 82 elements, supported by 30 Subtech 218s. The system was digitally controlled by Dolby Lake processors and amplified by Outline T9 power amps. System Engineer David Lombardi was pleased with the performance of the system. “I consider the Butterfly a perfect system for arena tours. Small and easy to rig, but with a big beefy sound and plenty of headroom.” w www.outline.it Allen & Heath has announced the forthcoming release of its new digital I/O expanders for the iDR digital installation series. Exhibiting at Integrated Systems Europe from February 3-5, 2009, the company will display the new units, which provide expansion options of up to 250m on CAT5 cable using the AES/ EBU protocol. The iDR-8 and iDR-4 mixing processor units currently use analogue interfaces. The decision to go digital was made because of an increasing demand to keep all audio interconnection in the digital domain. www.allen-heath.co.uk Kaiser beef The Tuborg GreenFest is a mainstay of Eastern Europe’s festival circuit. Having grown significantly since its conception three years ago, the 2008 GreenFest Tour visited Moscow, St Petersberg, Belgrade, Sofia, and Zagreb. The Zagreb line-up saw performances from the Kaiser Chiefs and a host of local synth-pop and electro groups. Headliners Kaiser Chiefs were described as the ‘meat’ of the one-day festival’s line-up. Tuborg, Live Nation, and Exit Festival organisers State of Exit chose Croatian rental company Lite Prom to provide a Turbosoud loudspeaker system for the event. “We used 2 stacks of Aspect in total,” explained Lite Prom’s Zeljko Radocaj. “This was augmented with four TSW218DP and six of Turbosound’s new self-powered Flex Array TFA-600HDP, which worked perfectly for this situation. Stage monitoring was from 1 TFM-50 wedges and a TQ-25SP was used for drum fill.” Turbosound’s Sales Manager Paul McMullan was pleased with the performance of his company’s products. “We’ve had some great feedback from those involved in the festival,” claimed McMullan. “This was a good demonstration of Flex Array’s versatility, and how well it integrates with Turbosound’s other product lines. It was also the first major outing for the new TSW-218DP subs – a digitally selfpowered double 18-inch horn-loaded sub-bass cabinet and our most powerful sub to date – and we were very pleased with the results.” Turbosound +44 (0) 1403 1144 www.turbosound.com QSC Audio Products has announced two new additions to its Digital Cinema Speaker Series for small theatres; the SC-2150 and SR8100.
