Keith McMillen Instruments has announced the release of two innovative products, in an attempt to enable these musicians to take full advantage of computer instruments. StingPort is a polyphonic string to USB 2.0 converter and software suite, providing guitarists and bowed string players with an alternative to standard MIDI conversion or polyphonic pickups. “StringPort solves a decades-old conundrum for string players,” explained McMillen. “Stringed instruments simply don’t fit the simple event model on which MIDI is based, leaving players of some of the most expressive instruments ever created struggling to wring emotion out of the computer musical instruments that have exploded onto the musical scene over the last 25 years.” The product is designed to provide more information than standard MIDI conversion, by analysing the audio signal and extracting the sonic properties of each string in high-resolution. Also new from McMillen Instruments is the K-Bow. This Bluetoothenabled, violin sensor bow detects and translates bow technique and movement into control signals to increase expression from synthesisers and audio processors. The StringPort and K-Bow will be on display at Winter NAMM in the new year. Using RME’s HDSPe MADIface PCI ExpressCard, he has turned his DiGiCo D5 and Apple Mac PowerBook into a relatively cheap, compact, and powerful workstation. “I’ve spent a lot of money on previous tours setting up a Pro Tools system just to archive a show,” commented Ebdon. Whilst he acknowledges that $50, 000 is a pretty insignificant sum for a major artist, Ebdon has a clear belief in the benefits of a compact system. This philosophy is clearly displayed in his FOH booth, which contains only a handful of additional external effects. “I’m a ‘less is more’ kind of person,” Ebdon confesses. “You have to get the source sound right and choose the right microphone, and a good mixing console does the rest… theoretically, I just push the fader up, and it sounds fantastic.” DiGiCo +44 (0) 1372 845600 www.digico.org Blue Microphones has released Mikey and Eyeball; two products that bring the company’s style and pro-audio expertise to the consumer market. Mikey is a device that turns your iPod into a location recorder. It features stereo condenser capsules, and selectable gain settings. Eyeball is a stylish HD webcam with condenser capsule. “Previous webcams and recorders were designed like computer peripherals, not specialised consumer electronics,” explained Blue’s President, Skipper Wise. “We’ve re-invented these markets with Blue’s sense of style and commitment to superior sound.” www.bluemic.com Waves Audio has released its Dorrough Meter Collection.
