AudioMedia - January 2009 - (Page 15) suitable for smaller spaces, between 150 to 200 seats or an area up to 200m . Above that we’d be looking at a horn-loaded system. The Lexi is a very nice size of room for what it is doing, because anything bigger is more theatrical, which needs a more theatrical system as modern films are getting louder and louder, with greater compression on the mixes.” As much of the original building was retained Munro says the sound proofing was ‘half way there’. The ‘typical’ Edwardian walls, roof, and parquet floor gave the acoustics team a solid foundation on which to get responses below NR25. Munro works to the Dolby Premier spec but, he says, takes that a ‘little bit further’ to achieve a more detailed sound from what is heard in the average multiplex. Th e Le x i fe a t u re s t wo installations by Sculptor and Lighting Designer Bruce Munro (no relation), one of which gives the sound an extra dimension Andy Munro was not expecting. Suspended from the ceiling of the auditorium is an extravagant fibre optic chandelier creation, which brightens the overall sound. “Because the HF is usually absorbed by people, most cinemas sound a little dull,” explains Munro. “The glass puts back the missing sparkle and produces a better sound. We’ve achieved a balanced acoustic in the Lexi, not too long in LF or too short in HF.” The loudspeaker system is based on the Dynaudio M range, with the left, centre, right front array consisting of hybrid M3FX cabinets. The subwoofer, a dual 18-inch design, is custom built, as are the 12 surround loudspeakers, which are derived from the Dynaudio BM15 small studio monitor. The system is powered by MC T2000 amplifiers producing 1,000W per channel at 4Ω. “That’s a lot of headroom,” Munro acknowledges, “but the multiplexes are putting in big power amps, which is all part of the quality process.” Munro prefers to use independent digital crossovers, in this case the TC Electronic XO24. Andy Munro sees digital as the future for cinemas, with satellite delivery and fuller automation “This idea of a flexible, multi-purpose venue called for audiovisual equipment that was suitably adaptable, and sound is a key component.” the next step. “The multiplexes will embrace digital if it saves them money,” he says. “The indies will want it if it makes life easier for them, but they also have to offer something the multiplexes don’t. Otherwise people will stay at home and watch Blu-ray.” The majority of art house cinemas, the Lexi included, do have that something ex tra, whether it ’s just the surroundings or organic wine and Fair Trade chocolate, and 3D could be another attraction in the future. But life is never easy in the independent sector. The Kino was a pioneer but its holding company went into receivership in October 2008, although it continues to operate under new management. The Lexi is in more familiar ar t house territor y – nor thwest London – and, with the technological support of digital, we can hope it will prosper and give a quantum of solace to others who feel the local cinema is for the community, and is not just about trend-led Holly wood fodder with interchangeable stars. ∫ Introducing the new PortaGig.
