AudioMedia - January 2009 - (Page 34) REALITY BITES Opportunities In Reality possible whilst we shot, in order to try and give the post production people a chance. I had recently bought a SADiE LRX multi-track recorder, and Trevor had mentioned in passing, ‘look at the Yamaha LS-something mixing desk’. I got straight online and found details of the Yamaha LS desk, which had recently been released. I realised immediately that this could be a really good way to sort out iso recording plus mixes for a lot of inputs. The two particularly useful features of the LS being that it would take a MADI IP/OP card, which would speak directly to the MADI input card on the LRX , and that it had faders, which you could build as a custom fader layout. The Restaurant was the first of many jobs that we have done since with the LRX /LS - combination. A M eal O f A Job About two years ago, I was asked by Trevor Hotz of Hotcam if I could work on a new series to be called The Restaurant, for the BBC. In the end, the shoot clashed with another job, but not before I managed to do all of the pre production meetings, and designed a workflow for both the studio shoot and a lot of the location coverage. The big challenge that the producers gave me was that they wanted to shoot for a day or two each week in a studio, with about participants, where everyone would be miked up, but they were not quite sure which bits of conversation they would like to hear at which time (lots of cameras with zoom lenses!). We would have to radio mic everyone up, and try to do as much mixing as > rigs (Deva , then . , and now with a Fusion). I like the Deva and Fusion recorders, especially now that they have eight volume knobs, and a CF card slot built in. The Deva had only four hardware knobs, plus four virtual onscreen faders, which was a little harder to work with. With eight analogue mic/line inputs, and its built-in mixing capabilities, it is quite simple to record pre fade iso tracks, plus a mix which can be sent to a wireless sender or video recorder. It is pretty much a onebox solution, other than radio mic receivers. The Aaton Cantar does a similar job, albeit with fewer mic IPs, though it does have six magnetic faders, and it is pretty much showerproof which could work well in certain climates. Sound Devices has recently introduced the T, a small -track machine, which when used with their bolt-on CL fader panel, can record eight iso tracks, plus up to four mixed tracks. The larger Sound Devices -Series machines can record to internal HDD, CF, and an EXT FW drive simultaneously, so there are possibilities to easily deliver large amounts of data on a HDD at the end of each day. > Simon Bishop with SADiE LRX. Our Smallest Sound Pro MKE 1 Whether for musicals and live shows, or for broadcasting applications, the MKE 1 – Sennheiser’s smallest clip-on microphone – performs at its best in all situations where a microphone needs to be virtually invisible and still offer outstanding sound quality. Its special gauze and multi-purpose cap offer additional protection from moisture so that it only picks up what it is meant to pick up – perfect sound. www.sennheiser.com SE_KG_AZ_MKE1_186x129mm_RZ.indd 1 04.12.2008 15:11:26 Uhr 34 AUDIO MEDIA JANUARY 2009 http://www.sennheiser.com http://www.sennheiser.com
