They have five-channel mixers and can possibly pull up five cast members to mix that down, wireless to camera. They also have another wireless transmitter so producers can listen into what they are mixing. They would have a boom as well.” As the main man, Kita mans a multi-track cart with a Yamaha DM and laptop computer. “I record everyone’s iso tracks. I also have an RF rack; we roll it around, set up a couple of antennas, and run CAT to my cart. We use a lot of Sennheiser wireless systems – the SKtransmitters and EMreceivers. In our ENG bags, we use the EKreceivers.” The Lo ok O f A Typical Day What’s a typical day in the life of The Look audio guru like? “Well, it begins in a loft on the Lower East Side,” reveals Kita. “The crews show up, the cast gets miked, and then we shoot them with some reality at the loft – getting ready, and something might happen where they’re told what they’re going to do. Then they would travel to a location – say, a sound stage in midtown, for instance. They’d do a challenge, like a photo shoot. Then they would head to a second challenge, go back the loft, and end the day there. The next day, the same thing would happen, but we’d go to the elimination stage and shoot there. Then they would go back for interviews. That’s how it runs.” “The biggest challenge of shooting in New York is the RF (radio frequency) issue,” reveals Kita. “The city has so much going on, we have to search for frequencies that we can use. On the first day of shooting, we’re dealing with wireless lavaliers as well as channels of wireless frequencies that go to the camera, plus seven frequencies for producers to listen. It’s a challenge to find the available frequencies to use. When we’re all around town, we just have to make it up as we go; every time we went to a new location, we found the available frequencies. He and his cohorts pursue the business because it’s fun, inspiring, and a constant challenge. “We don’t just set up at one location,” Kita offers with noted excitement. ”You’re always thinking about something new, and that’s what I like about it. Other types of shoots include setting up at a location; once you’re set up, you’re good. We have challenges and scenarios every day, and our cast members are doing very different things every day. I like that it’s a new thing every day: a new show can be shot anywhere in the world. Also, the camaraderie presents a lot more in the way of fun, too. You’re dealing with a lot more than just audio. It becomes a bit of a management situation, where you’re dealing with everyone and everyone else’s packages, making it all work together. You become a team. With eight cameras shooting at once, we have people on the floor, equipment all around, and dealing with it all just comes with the experience of working on these types of shows. We’ve learned how to move with it. It’s become second nature to us because it’s what we do.
