AudioMedia - January 2009 - (Page 45) Sadie | LRX2 or changed by removing and replacing a pair of retaining screws. Some of the cards need a little ‘encouragement’ to get them past the locking tabs of the adjacent XLR sockets, but it genuinely takes less than five minutes to change all three slither cards. Operationally this is a huge advantage, as it allows one base unit to perform in many different roles, with many different rigs and setups. produced specifically for the LRX recorders. For multi-track recording the MTR software is quite brilliant, and is easy to get to grips with. If you open the MTR software with an LRX connected, the system checks the number of input channels fitted and starts a project to match. MTR presents the user with a kind of simplified version of the SADiE timeline screen, but with some great enhancements for multi-track work. Basically everything happens on one screen, including recording level and track info, project info, editing, and so on. MTR has a ready-made mixer that will mix down to two tracks as you are recording, so if you need a guide track made as you are recording the multi-tracks, this is entirely possible. The fader functions can be switched between pan position (left is down, right is up), input level (to record tracks), and output level (to the stereo mix stream which is at the top). There are some great short cuts as well. For example, if you want to pan all the faders to their middle position just press ‘CTRL’ and touch the appropriate faders. So, to rig an LRX ready to record, make sure that appropriate slither cards for your job are fitted, and plug in the looms (or BNCs/optical for MADI) and any sync and/or TC inputs. Plug in vDC to the LRX base unit, set up and connect (USB) a laptop on the top panel, and fire it up. If you take your time, it could be done in the time it would take to boil a kettle. It really is that simple and quick, and I have been known to get an LRX up and running from out of the flightcase in well under two minutes. There is a small fan in the LRX base unit, which can vary in speed. It is quiet (many laptops are louder), but it is there – be aware if setting up in the same room as your microphones. The control surface is angled slightly to make things easy to get to. It can be broadly divided into left and right sides, where the left side deals with mostly fader and channel functions, and the right side covers transport and DAW functions. The fader side has eight motorised faders, with channel no. displays above each, plus backlit buttons for PFL and Record enable. There are two buttons adjacent to the faders, which switch the fader bank and fader functions, with LEDs to show what fader function is selected; pan, input level, or output level. The MTR software (Multi-track Recorder, more later) will look at the type and number of slither cards fitted and set the project details to match, thus adjusting the number of banks of faders. The motorised faders sense skin (or is it flesh?) so will resist movement when operated by a pencil, knitting needle, or other inanimate object. Unfortunately this also applies to human nails, which caused some intrigue on an early job. The right side has a jog wheel, surrounded by nine shortcut editing buttons, plus a bank of six function buttons (transport short cuts), a master level fader, a talkback button, and three nice big, transport control buttons for Play, Stop, and Record. These last three buttons have protection bars either side of them to prevent accidental operation, and are backlit, so you get a good bright, red light when you go into record. R eady To R ecord > The S of t ware Side The LRX can run full SADiE software, which might be a little daunting if you are a location recordist not overly experienced in building virtual mixers, etc, on a DAW. There is, however, a jewel in the LRX’s crown that somewhat negates the need to learn a whole new system on a new platform.
