AudioMedia - January 2009 - (Page 46) Sadie | LRX2 The right hand part of the screen is a timeline, and shows the track waveforms as they are being recorded. This has always been a great feature of SADiE, and gives great peace of mind. Suffice to say that I have never known a SADiE to draw a waveform whilst in record, but not to have recorded that audio. You can number and/or name streams, and those stream names can be built into the recorded filenames. There is an option to use the iXML metadata to construct filenames, so if you name a track Bass Guitar, and the shot no. is slate take , the recorded filename will be _ -Bass Guitar. The Source Tracks Pane is a window that pops up when you push a button that looks like a blue filing cabinet. From this pane you can set up your metadata values, and also choose record and mirror drive destinations. Another neat trick that LRX can do is to record to two different drives simultaneously. This means that if you have an ongoing project, you can put smaller, deliverable files on one destination, whilst amassing a huge set of files on another much larger drive, as a backup or archive. I should point out that all SADiEs do all audio processing within the hardware, so in the case of the LRX , the laptop is being used as a screen and keyboard, and to port data to wherever it is being recorded. This means that you can use a laptop of lesser spec, and yet still record many tracks and impressive quantities of data. SADiE allows you to edit on screen whilst you are recording, so you can, for instance, cut the false start off a musical recording whilst you are still recording, which could be a great timesaver if you need to burn disks immediately after a concert finishes. I haven’t had time yet to mention that the audio on the LRX sounds fab. The analogue mic/ line input cards are about as neutral as I have heard, and are quiet, with loads of headroom. I have had some pretty unpredictable levels sent to me over the years, and yet I don’t think I have ever managed to get the LRX IP cards into distortion, they just seem to take it. > The screen is not far removed from a regular SADIE desktop, and will certainly feel familiar to experienced SADiE users. For those who are new to this kind of multi-track recording kit, the screen can be broadly divided into a top and bottom bar, and left and right sides. The top bar provides drop down menus for setup and housekeeping things, whereas the bottom bar has shortcuts to various operational parameters, plus a set of transport controls. The left hand side of the screen has all the individual track channel controls, like solo, mute, record enable input level, mic pad, phantom power, and for mic/line IP cards, an input level selector. The meters are user programmable, which is an excellent feature. You can set the width of the meters, where they change colour from green to yellow to red, and what the dB values are at those colour change points. This means that you can, for instance, set the top dB to take up most of the meter’s width, with the colour changing from yellow to red at, say - dB. The metering is really informative, and you can save your favourite meter setups for reuse. If you are not using a channel you can click on its channel number to disable it. The background for that channel will then look slightly darker to indicate it is not in use. The clever bit now is that if you push the shortcut button for ‘Record All’, the SADiE will arm all the remaining tracks ignoring the disabled ones – another great shortcut. THE SYMPHONY SYSTEM The Most Powerful Audio Workstation Available The Symphony System combines Apogee’s legendary X-Series and Rosetta Series converters with Apple’s revolutionary Mac Pro and Logic Pro audio workstation using the 32-channel Symphony PCI card. BEST SOUNDING The most sonically advanced audio hardware interfaces combined with the most advanced music creation and production tool. HIGHEST PERFORMANCE 1.6 milliseconds at 96k and up to 192 simultaneous channels of audio. Introducing Logic Studio A suite of powerful, easy-to-use music creation and production tools, Logic Studio gives musicians everything they need to write, record, edit, mix and perform. GREATEST VALUE A fraction of the cost of popular card-based, DSP systems. The SADiE LRX is small, light, and works from vDC. It is quick to rig, and the MTR software is easy and swift to learn. The LRX is reliable, adaptable, and sounds great. It is one of the most rock solid pieces of kit that I have had the pleasure to use, and also one of the most pleasurable. I can’t help but think that Prism (the new owner of SADiE) will have its work cut out trying to improve on what it got with the LRX . ∫ I N F O R MAT I O N Conclusion Symphony PCIE Card 32-Channels of I/O per card & up to 96 channels per system. £ From GB£21,340.00 (exc.VAT) (inc. flight case) The Total Package A Sadie/Prism Media Products Ltd., The Old School, High Street, Stretham, Cambs CB6 3LD, UK T +44 (0) 1353 648888 W www.sadie.com E sales@sadie.com A Prism Media Products Inc., 21 Pine Street, Rockaway, NJ 07866, USA T +1 973 983 9577 E sales@prismsound.com 46 AUDIO MEDIA JANUARY 2009 http://www.sadie.com http://www.sonic-distribution.com
