Again you activate ‘Send’ in the RTS panel, and the remote studio (with producer) selects ‘Receive’ – so you are in control of the transport. This time you use your Pro Tools space bar play cursor or console transport play, and the remote end offsets to compensate for the time of arrival difference. Voila – he hears your audio in perfect sync. How easy was that? So, without much fuzz and buzz (as is common in these festive times), let’s move onto Source Element’s latest audio alchemy. Rebekah Wilson (Source Elements Technical Director) and her team have been mighty busy creating the magic for Source Elements. If this doesn’t rock your audio world (if you can excuse my evangelising), then I will eat my proverbial party hat. Source-Connect . has introduced ‘autorestore’ and ‘auto-replace’ via the Q-manager. These features are so revolutionary that I am adamant the team deserves an award for technical achievement (douze point, s’il vous plait). Let’s backtrack to what Source-Connect (or ISDN for that matter) is actually doing, and you will see why. The audio signal is split into packets and sent over the Internet or network. These packets are sent sequentially to your connected partner. In an imperfect world, a network error might occur and a packet might not arrive in time, causing an audio tick or glitch in the received audio signal. Source-Connect has built-in error correction modes to resolve these dropped packet issues in real time. However, under certain circumstances, a packet may not be retrieved in time to prevent data loss before the signal is recorded. Before now, the only way to guarantee no data loss was to duplex record (record at both ends). Musical M agic Now there are not just two get out of jail free cards, but three! Source Elements has cunningly implemented ‘Auto-Restore’, which resolves this problem by seamlessly working in the background (in non real time) and restoring the missing packets. Awesome! When I last tried it, my remote session (who sadly was not blessed in New Zealand with such robust bandwidth as me) watched a YouTube video at the same time as sending tone, to reduce the bandwidth of their connection and simulate a worse connection. This worked, and a few holes were both audible and visible in the waveform of my recording. By the time I had hit ‘stop’, and gone back in my timeline to replay the glitches with missing audio, there were none already! All I had to do was recalculate the waveform overviews (which were now wrongly showing audio holes whilst the audio had E scape The Jailer AUDIO MEDIA JANUARY 2009 http://www.sourceelements.com
