Played by Ewald Kooiman, a renowned Dutch organist and Bach expert, the performances have been captured using DPA 4006 omnidirectional mics. All organs were built in the 18th century by father and son team Andreas and Johann Andreas Silbermann, and are located in historic churches in the Alsace. “For our recordings we use two completely independent setups,” explains Aeolus’ Christoph Frommen, “one surround setup with five discrete channels, and an additional two-channel stereo setup. We sometimes use two or four more channels for capturing additional ambience. The microphones we use are all DPA’s famous 4006 omnis, of which we own thirteen.” Frommen uses a surround microphone installation known as the Polyhymnia Pentagon, which draws on the proportions of the surround pentagon defined for loudspeaker installation. An AB setup was used for the stereo recording. Frommen is impressed by the performance of his DPA 4006s; “Hardly any other omnidirectional microphone is able to match the clearness and the undistorted sound of a small diaphragm microphone like the 4006.” DPA Microphones +45 4814 2828 www.dpamicrophones.com Massachusetts-based computerperipherals developer MOTU has released the Traveler-mk3, a mobile Firewire audio interface for Mac and Windows. The Traveler-mk3 is designed for portable recording applications, and provides eight channels of 192kHz analogue recording and playback, combined with twenty channels of digital I/O in ADAT optical, AES/EBU, and S/PDIF formats. The FlexWand makes its debut following the introduction of the Earthworks PianoMic System, winner of multiple industry awards including the prestigious Mix Foundation’s TEC Award for Outstanding Technical Achievement. The FlexWand is a microphone solution consisting of a fully integrated small diaphragm condenser microphone, stand, and boom. The flex mid-section and mini gooseneck on the wand allows the mic to be easily positioned between 1.5 and seven feet above floor level. Although it was originally designed for choral miking applications, it is also recommended for use with other sources, such as acoustic instruments, drums, and podium speech.
