The production stars Sir Ian McKellen, and was filmed at Pinewood Studios. Blue aimed to heighten immersion and realism through its sound design and 5.1 mix. “With everything shot on a sound stage, you pick up a degree of ambience,” commented Dubbing Mixer Phitz Hearne. Blue placed sounds such as horse hooves and additional dialogue in the 5.1 mix to enhance the sense of space. “Producing a 5.1 mix can be as simple as making music come out of the different speakers,” explained Hearne. “But it you want to use it artistically to engulf the audience and place them in the centre of the action, that’s when you can begin to create a much more believable soundtrack by building layers and highlighting textures placed in each of the six speaker channels.” Blue Post Production +44 (0) 2074 372626 www.bluepp.co.uk WAVE AMSTERDAM OPENING Wave studios has opened a post-production house in Amsterdam. AKA Design was asked to design and produce the facility’s interior. “AKA likes to involve the client throughout the entire design stage, and this breeds creativity,” commented Wave Studios’ Creative Director, Warren Hamilton. Wave Amsterdam consists of two surround studios, one Dolby EX Certified, and one separate pre-production suite. The facility’s main recording and edit machine is a Nuendo, with a Euphonix System 5-MC control platform. “Building a studio from scratch was a perfect chance for us to experiment to make sure we chose the right gear to give us longevity,” explained Hamilton.
