AudioMedia - February 2009 - (Page 27) Korg | MR200S home of the National Orchestra of Wales, and a really good place to find some top-notch music going on. Huw Thomas is the Senior Engineer at the Hall, rightly proud of a suberb studio built around a Studer Vista . It’s interesting that as in many modern installs, it’s easier to find a spare AES feed than it is a spare analogue. Having tracked down a spare line out or two, I strapped the MRS across a rehearsal for one of the really varied opening series of concerts, and sat back while the machine collected the files. Just one slot below the Korg in the bay was the Tascam DSD machine, but sadly due to time constraints I wasn’t able to do any comparison tests. The recording retained the quite remarkable and luminous tone produced by a Stradivarius in the hands of Baiba Skride, while also retaining the big bang fun of Varèse’s Ionisation. technology can do. And if you feel very strongly about it then you can always treat the MRS as a -bit KHz recorder – which sounds very good. The Korg isn’t perfect, but for the most part it seems a perfectly usable piece of kit that achieves what it sets out to do: make high quality recordings that are easily transcoded into other formats, when very high quality is the name of the game. One thing I’m not sure about is what you do if you live totally in a digital world. Would it be better to connect the Korg to a high bit-rate PCM output from your desk and record in PCM, or record DSD from an analogue output from the desk that’s already gone through a D to A process? While you chew on that, back in analogue world don’t worry, just press ‘record’. ∫ I N F O R MAT I O N up to KHz at bits, directly of course. Down sampling the DSD files to lower bit rates, say . KHz -bit, and I can hear the difference – well, I think I can hear the difference, but I know there are better ears then mine, and you’re going to have to get your lugs across the different options to decide at what level your boat begins to float. The USB thing works for me, although I did half expect an Ethernet port, given that these days everything has an IP address, except maybe the dog, and I’m not sure about that. I’d like front panel volume controls – not vital in a mastering context when you have a bit of time, but instant tactile control is a good thing for record volume. The menus are okay, but the project structure of everything in its own folder makes playback a little laborious. I liked the fact that you have the whole alphabet on the screen for naming files and folders, but a keyboard input would be sweet. £ GB£1,586.00 (inc.VAT) A Korg USA, Inc., 316 South Service Road, Melville, NY 11747-3201, USA I took the Korg down to Hoddinott Hall at the Millennium Centre in Cardiff. This is the new Tests I n Concer t Having lived with the Korg for a couple of weeks, I really am quite taken with it. To be honest I had such great fun making recordings and listening to them that the rather furious debate that has surrounded DSD seemed to slip into the distance. I know there are papers that prove DSD doesn’t work, and others that prove it’s the only way forward.
