AudioMedia - February 2009 - (Page 5) leader Your are what your job title says your are. Well, sort of. Job titles are important to most people, and even if you're a freelancer your best credit – or your last credit – tends to define you in the eyes of others. But this idea implies that without that last credit, or without that job title, you are something different – maybe even something less. That can't be right, can it? Everybody knows someone who doesn't deserve their job title. And (I'd hope) everybody knows someone who does. So while the job title defines something, I rather think it defines a benchmark of knowledge, experience, competence, and so on. The real question is whether someone fulfils that title, or not. There are very few industries where the merits of past performance are irrelevant, and even fewer where drastic under-performance are tolerated. But the 'just good enough' brigade and the 'tolerated' minority are a massive grey area. Their peers' views might be lifted slightly by a job title, but in that case the title is a bit like a bass port – take it away, and the gentle shelf re-estaablishes itself as an imminent fall from grace. At the moment, some good people are losing their jobs – people who more than fulfil their job titles – simply because there's less money around. So we're in the unusual situation where the 'unexpectedly freelance' pot is being fed not just by a trickle of people who deserve to be re-assessing their career paths, or young hopefuls emerging from the Student Union bar with stars in their eyes and a Media Studies degree, but by a faster flow of unlucky colleagues and peers. So the question for those people is, 'what am I without the job title?' You are still as good as your credit list. You are still as good as the degree to which you fulfilled your previous job title. And you are still as good as your peers judge you to be. That's not a patronising consolation prize for being out of work – it's a group of facts that transcend a job title. Last month I wrote about the passion that drives so many people in the creative industries. The motivation for that passion is an unfathomable mixture of too many things to mention; though unfortunately, in times like these, that motivation is both bolstered and tarnished by the grime of feeling forced to defend your income. If that's a difficult thing to grapple with, remember that if you have to move on at some point it's the things you do have control over that become important. You may not be able to do anything about your job title, but you can do something about the degree to which you fulfil it.
