AudioMedia - February 2009 - (Page 57) www.audiomedia.com NEW PRODUCTS Peavey has updated its PR Series powered loudspeakers with class D amplifier topology, for lighter weight in the new PR 15D and PR 12D models. The PR 15D and PR 12D are two-way powered loudspeaker systems, with a bi-amplified class D power section driving a 12-inch woofer. The high-speed amp topology yields improved audio resolution and efficiency, helping the PR Series to shed 20 percent of its weight compared to previous models. w www.peavey.com One Night In Norway Backstage with Oystein Karlsen at the 2008 Nobel Peace Prize ceremony. Oslo-based AVAB-CAC has once again provided audio for the Nobel Peace Prize ceremony. This year, the company took a new approach to the audio network by linking two Midas XL8s, and three PRO6 consoles via AES50, to cover three stages, produce live sound, and provide a broadcast feed. “Quite simply, we changed from a system that used many snakes, analogue and digital, running back and forth between the various performance areas and took us five to six hours to install and check, to a process that took barely half an hour,” explained System Designer Oystein Karlsen. Duties for the two FOH XL8s were divided between the three stages. The first desk handled orchestral inputs, VT feeds, and inputs from presenters Scarlett Johansson and Sir Michael Caine. The second desk mixed down the bands performing on the left and right stages, then fed the resulting mixes into the first XL8 for the final mix, balancing them with the orchestra. The system handled 100 inputs from the Norwegian Radio Orchestra, and inputs from guest artists on the other stages. Signals from all three stages ran to racks of Midas DL431 mic splitters. The mix engines, with all desks, splitters, and DL461 routers, were linked via Cat 5, AES50, and fibre optic. The 2008 Nobel Peace Prize was awarded to Martti Ahtisaari, who has helped resolve conflicts in many countries over the past 30 years. Midas Consoles + () www.midasconsoles.com NEW PRODUCT Electro-Voice has announced NetMax N8000-1500, a product that the company claims as “the most powerful pro audio processor on the market”. Based on technology from the NetMax N8000, it has been improved by the addition of a DSP-2 engine, which expands the processing power of the N8000-1500 to 1500 MIPS. Its modular nature also means that each additional input or output card provides an additional DSP engine, and another 100MIPS of processing power. w www.electrovoice.com Delta Rings In The New Year Delta Sound provided audio coverage for a km stretch of the River Thames, as part of a New Year’s Eve celebration. The event attracted , people, and Delta Sound had the task of ensuring that they all heard Big Ben’s bells. “With the general ambient level in the area, it’s impossible to hear the bells unaided,” explained Delta Sound’s Managing Director, Paul Keating, “But the evening went off without a hitch.” Delta achieved this success by erecting smart masts in each of the gardens along Victoria Embankment, from which were hung clusters of five V-Dosc, and three dVDosc to cover the area surrounding the London Eye. Three cranes, each with hangs of 16V-Dosc, were used to extend the coverage to Waterloo Bridge and Temple. Delta ran a 4km fibre network from its control position to the main mast positions, to manage the PA system. A microwave link was positioned on top of each crane, relaying off the top of the shell building, to provide the show feed, with the mix supplied by a DiGiCo SD8 at Front of House. “By 3.30am, everything was cleared away and you would never have known we were there,” commented Delta Sound’s Phil Kidd. Delta Sound + () www.deltasound.co.uk WHO’S THERE An unusual Dutch production has been putting DiGiCo’s new SD8 through its paces as part of a touring performance of The Who’s rock opera, Tommy. Sound Contractors The Purple Group have recorded every show to a laptop, enabling them to soundcheck in each venue without the band being present. “It makes soundchecking so much easier and quicker, because we can do it whenever it’s convenient,” explained Front of House Engineer, Robert de Loey. w www.digico.org AUDIO MEDIA FEBRUARY 2009 57 http://www.audiomedia.com http://www.peavey.com http://www.midasconsoles.com http://www.electrovoice.com http://www.deltasound.co.uk http://www.digico.org
