AudioMedia - March 2009 - (Page 15) Sound Trekker on the Road with SSL arco Breidenbach’s portable Sound Trekker Studio is in demand all over Europe. And at the centre of this bespoke and eminently portable facility sits a Solid State Logic AWS 900+ console. One of the first projects to use the new desk was to record Joss Stone and her 10-piece band with Engineer friend Hans-Martin Buff. Breidenbach wanted to step ‘outside-the-box’ to achieve punchier, wider, and tighter mixes – the kind that he was used to hearing from all of the earlier work he’d done on SSL consoles. “I wanted the legendary SSL sound with no compromises, but also combined with DAW control. He tested the SSL at his studio to see if it could cope as a viable centre-piece for the new and portable Sound Trekker Studio. “Within a day I set up and connected the AWS 900+ to my studio, including the Studer A80 2-inch, Pro Tools HD 4, and the studio’s extensive range of analogue outboard gear. Once installed, I then began heavily testing the mixing capabilities. M “Sound Trekker Studio recently re-opened after making the studio all mobile, including full patchbay, outboard racks and, of course, the AWS 900+. We’ve branded it as Sound Trekker Studio, ‘The World Class Studio To Go’. “With the SSL I’m just more efficient in getting a great result, and it’s so much faster when you can touch a real fader in the analogue domain rather than using a mouse to tweak the mix. Most of all, it brings back the human touch to any mix. Every mix now sounds much more transparent, stereo placement is precise, and everything is exactly there, where I think it should be. “And the third dimension has been added to my mixes – something that I always missed when staying purely in the digital domain. In the recording process the 24 on-board mic pres are exactly what I was looking for to get tracks taped quickly in such quantity and with such a great sound. From the day I bought it, the SSL immediately became another instrument that adds sound personality to everything I do on it.” M’elodie Transforms Landmark Berlin Theatre eyer Sound’s M’elodie line array loudspeakers are taking centre-, left, and right-stage at the Friedrichstadtpalast, one of Berlin’s key theatres. The Friedrichstadtpalast lies just beyond the old Checkpoint Charlie where East once confronted West in Germany, but today stands as a high-tech marvel in a city brimming with innovation. Boasting the largest indoor stage in the world, at 2,542m2, the Palast was conceived as a technical tour-de-force from its outset in 1984, featuring staging and rigging intricacies capable of hosting the most outlandish and ambitious productions. M “This theatre was very famous in the time of the DDR (Deutsche Demokratische Republik/German Democratic Republic)”, says Technical Director Franz-Josef Münzebrock. The newly installed audio system is based around Meyer Sound’s M’elodie line array loudspeaker, CQ-1 and CQ-2 loudspeakers, and MM-4 miniature loudspeaker. The central line array is comprised of eight M’elodie loudspeakers, supported by three 700-HP subwoofers. The left and right hangs each consists of ten M’elodie loudspeakers, also underpinned by three 700-HP subwoofers on each side. A centreleft and a centre-right hang, used for the orchestral program, each uses six M’elodie loudspeakers. Sirius Joins Kudo Programme S irius Showequipment, one of Germany’s leading tour sound rental companies, has joined the L-Acoustics K1/KUDO Pilot Programme. CEO Wolfgang ‘Schabbach’ Neumann is excited at the prospect of using the system for this year’s open-air season. “We were very impressed by the power capability of the system, especially the fact that distribution is so equal in both the horizontal and vertical planes,” he says. “But what’s really struck us is the great response to the system from our customer base. Our new L-Acoustics K1/ KUDO system will be the backbone of our rental activities throughout 2009, and the system will be on the road all season. This is Sirius Showequipment’s first purchase of L-Acoustics systems after years of positive experiences renting V-DOSC, dV-DOSC, and KUDO on a dry hire basis. The system will comprise 48 K1 line source cabinets, 24 K1-SB subs, 24 SB28 subs, 24 KUDO line source cabinets, 12 dV-DOSC compact line source enclosures, and 75 LA8 amplified controllers installed in LA-RAKs. Jochen Frohn, Business Development Director at L-Acoustics, adds: “Sirius has been looking at buying an L-Acoustics system for some time and has amassed a lot of positive experience of working with our products. It’s great news for us that they are part of the K1/ KUDO pilot program. AUDIO MEDIA MARCH 2009 http://www.mcdsp.com
