AudioMedia - March 2009 - (Page 23) But I t Looks S o Much Bigger! When it comes to using the SE IRF on drums, it is clearly all about your performer’s choice of drum elements and position. It can be quite an act to get the IRF into a usable position… suddenly the IRF looks so much bigger. Using the IRF between snare and hat is an obvious area to try. With the mic tight in the pocket of the IRF, the level of separation achieved is particularly pleasing. Reversing the position of the IRF to isolate the hat gave equally good results. Out front with acoustic guitar using a pair of IRF units achieved great stereo separation. This type of application is where SE probably saw the IRF being used predominantly. You have quite a lot of control here when it comes to low mid response, and it is easy to overcook this by being just that little bit too close. When using different microphones, the body shape made positioning within the IRF tricky, and it is here that you can see some of the limitations. With some popular microphone choices, you may need to explore other ways to achieve separation. I had five SE IRF units for testing, and one idea that was tried took the five units on different stands and used various combinations to create mini screens and acoustic boxes to place single and stereo pairs of microphones into. This can, and did, look a little cumbersome with some setups, but useful and creative nevertheless. Careful Control Is Key www.schoeps.de/showroom/ Unrivalled innovation Excerpt from a contribution to an Internet forum: I found the SE IRF to be a very useful acoustic isolating device to use. When you have a few of them together it opens up a wide range of instrument recording possibilities. There are limitations in the microphones you can use and position relative to the instruments, but this is not too much of an issue in practice. As an additional tool for instrument studio recording, the SE IRF is certainly worth spending some time with. ∫ Conclusion “Wow, one of the best online presentations I've ever seen.” a practical comparison of recording techniques SCHOEPS GmbH Spitalstr. 20 D-76227 Karlsruhe www.schoeps.de mailbox@schoeps.de Tel. +49 721 943 200 AUDIO MEDIA MARCH 2009 23 http://www.seelectronics.com http://www.sonic-distribution.com/uk http://www.schoeps.de/showroom/ http://www.schoeps.de/showroom/ http://www.schoeps.de
