Even if you’re not on stage yourself – thanking Mum, Dad, and the kids for putting up with your artism – the empathy in this industry is enough to carry the day. And honestly, I never knew there were quite so many audio-related awards in such a short space of time, before we put together the awards round-up on page 40. I still think that the one and two awards in the BAFTA and Academy Awards respectively are a little short of what should be apportioned to audio. We certainly don’t get it any worse than other contributory ‘technical’ disciplines, but I don’t think this is a fair comparison. We know (even though some others don’t) that when Mr Lucas stated that audio is 50 percent of a film, he was probably just trying to keep the video guys happy – or else the caterers were included in the other half. Either way, with that blessing we can rightly claim half of ‘Best Film’ and its derivatives, and about 10 percent of any video awards (it’s sound that makes video look good). Also, unless the judges solely use the manuscript for assessment, we can claim a fair portion of the best film music stuff – after all, a musician is only as good as his or her microphone placement (I’m pretty sure that’s the way it was explained to me). And a similar argument is applicable to script and talent accolades. And we also get a proportion of any grip (in fact, all production crew) merit – mostly because without the microphone pointed in the right direction they’d be marched off set in a trice for having noisy clogs. In summary, a film or television programme is basically great sound with pictures added incase someone complains. Additional applause – and maybe even a standing ovation – is due to the Music Producers’ Guild for an outstanding celebration of music production talent in its inaugural awards ceremony in London last month. The evening itself was the ultimate antidote to the isolation and sunlight deprivation (and dehydration, apparently) that a large proportion of the production community suffers on a daily basis. The award list was comprehensive, and all recipients were utterly deserving of the recognition – as are the Guild committee and associate organisers for an excellent idea, well executed. Finally, I would like to extend Audio Media’s congratulations to all winners and nominees, in all audio categories, in all the early 2009 awards ceremonies. I also want to thank Warner Bros Studios, the Pinewood Group, and Sound24 for helping us get the double Final Cut together at such short notice; BAFTA, The Academy, the MPG, the MPSE, the Recording Academy, and CAS for providing the inspiration for this issue; NewBay Media for just being there; my Mum, my Dad… Sorry, I’m welling up.
